Campaign Questions .. Want to make sure I'm doing this correctly.

By Alienmastermind, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Okay -- in Campaign mode -- Do you NEED to play A Fat Goblin with First Blood? Or can you play any 3 Act I missions?

How we played tonight was this: First Blood -- Then the players went to Arhynn. Since they had two treasures, they shopped. Then they went to Death on the Wing. Narrowly winning the first mission, and almost losing on the second mission.

We had: The Knight character with the female Elf character
The Necromancer Character with the Widow/
The Disciple Character with The male cleric
The Spiritspeaker Character with the mini that looks like it has a fox tail.

My open group in the second half of Death on the Wing were Flesh Moulders, and let me tell you, the elite Flesh Moulder healing up Belthir made for a harrowing fight -- especially that once the guards are activated, they head right for the monsters. Meaning you can move the Elementals into the area, and they just swarm an Elemental until they Flame burst all of them. :)

However, through perseverance and luck, they only lost two of the guards to explosions. Mainly due to the Female elf Knight's Heroic Feat.

Anyway, I don't know if I was supposed to force them to do A Fat Goblin as a mission first, or if you can do any three Act I missions after First Blood as the first mission…

"Choose Next Quest" (Page 21). Whoever wins the previous Act 1 quest chooses any of the remaining Act 1 quests. You do not have to play "A Fat Goblin" at all if you so desire.

Why would you think A Fat Goblin is particularly special compared to the other Act I quests?

An add-on question to this post: What is the strategic element behind choosing one quest over the other?

All five of our players are brand new (as almost everyone is as its so new of a game) and have no idea what quest does what. So when picking quests, I've just been kind of going in order for Act 1 and then we'll be getting specific to Hero vs Overlord selections for Act 2 whenever that comes up.

But the question still is, why should I choose Fat Goblin over some other quest? Is the design concept that we've played through the campaign several times and now understand these quests and how difficult they are for each side, or is there some more obvious reason to choose one quest over the other that I am not getting?

Thanks,

Tom / Doc4

Keep in mind that you only play 3 Act I Quests. That means if you're doing them in order, then (if I remember correctly) Masquerade Ball and Death on the Wing will not be played. If you always do them in order, then those Quests will never be played.

As for why you should choose one Quest over another? The potential rewards for both players.

For example, the shield Relic only comes from Death on the Wing (I believe). So if you don't pick it, no one can have it.

If the Masquerade Ball isn't played, no one can get the dice Relic.

If Cardinal's Plight is not played, no one can get the staff Relic.

So, in the case of the Relic quests, it may be strategically beneficial for the Heroes to decide which of them they want to do, and to do them later in the campaign when they're better outfitted to obtain them (or if the Overlord has control, to do them sooner. I find that the game balance tilts towards the Heroes near the end of Act I before tilting back in Act II).

Same goes for Act II, you'll only play 3 of the 5 available Quests, so look at the rewards for each when choosing which to do.
