Who actually won?

By blashkowitch, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Good Morning,

Yesterday when I was playing with friend joust game … situation like this occured and we are not sure who won, …

Situation :

I had 12 power on house, and 2 power on Ellaria Sand, and few other characters, Opponent had 10 power on house and 1 power on each Army of the Faithful. He had 2 Army of the faitful,

then I attacked with military challenge , with Nymeria Sand… he dalcred defenders 2 armys of the faithful and thoros of Myr, (all renown)

And the question is, who won

1. Me because I lost challenge and I can move one power from any character to Ellaria and then can he claim for renown ?

2, He because he claims 3 power for renown and then I can claim power for Ellaria because I lost challenge ?

How wold be the challenge resolve looks like?

Thanks,…

If you look at the faq it will break down all the timing structures in detail for you, but basically your friend will win, quick short hand goes something like this.

1. Work out who won.

2. Do Claim

3. Unopposed power granted.

4. Renown Granted. (your friend wins here)

After that passives trigger, after those responses can be triggered like Ellaria

Hope this helps :)

so in step 4. key words are resolved like renown deadly ? , if I'm the first player I choose what would be first renown or deadly, ? If i choose deadly , kill one army with power , so he didn't claim for renown , he has 13, then Ellaria can trigger her abillity, I won? Or It's still his win ? Don't quite get it,…

My apologies, i should have worked its through to its proper conclusion.

Deadly resolves as a passive, as is clarified in the faq, so it comes into effect after renown is granted, so your friend will still win as as SOON as he get 15 power as the game ends so deadly never has a chance to come into effect.

The real part i still sometimes struggle with, and struggle to articulate well, is moribund and power after a challenge resolves. When a card would be killed/discarded/returned to hand/deck or shadows, and is NOT saved, it is not immediatley removed from the table that happens as the very last thing in the action window.

As an example,

Joffrey baratheon (core set version, Lord. Response: after a lord or lady character is killed joffrey claims 1 power, limit 3 times per round) is in play and between the power on his controllers house card and on joffrey he has 14 power. His opponent has 0 power and 1 character with a military icon and decides that a dead joffrey is the best joffrey and attacks in a military challenge. He wins and with no other character to use for claim, and no saves, the lannister player has to kill Joffrey, who becomes moribund:dead. The problem is that as joffery stays on the table until the END of the window he is eligable to use his response to himself dying. He claims 1 power, and the lannister player goes to 15 and wins.

Im hoping this helps but is more likely to confuse further so im hoping that ktom or one of the other rules gurus can save my horrible explanation :D

I see,

It's much clearer now, … thanks

When in doubt, the answer to this question is always "Dennis".

Underworld, your explanation is pretty good (in my estimation). I don't really see anything that's incorrect in either your explanation or your examples. :)

It is strange and counter-intuitive that Renown and Stealth are the only keywords to be part of the innate framework structure of the game, while (virtually) all others (**** you Ambush) activate as passives; yet that is the way of it.

I almost feel like there should be a line in the FAQ pointing this out, because I'm sure it screws up a lot of new people.

I'm one of those dinosaurs who's been around since Renown and Stealth were the only keywords period, back in the long-long-ago before there were such things as Greyjoys, Targaryens, or Martells.

Sounds boring! LOL!

and one more question to action window, when would by plot resolved , when a I would have out Fury of the Sun, before claim , after claim and before renown ? or at the end of the challenge when it's evrything set … and then would it be plot resolved ?

It's not clear if this is your interpretation, but just to be clear the defender chooses the character to die to deadly. If your opponent had all renown characters it would be a renown character to die. However, since renown happens before passives (as already pointed out) if the renown gets him to 15 power he wins before deadly.

Lets say the renown gets him to 14 and he has 1 char in challenge with renown and 1 without. Your opponent can chose the char without power from renown to die to deadly.
