Shiver overpowered?

By noloatmo, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Is anyone feeling the same as me about the hero Shiver? I find him extremely powerful, maybe a bit too much. Aura 4 means the Aura special ability extends 4 spaces away from the hero (if I understand correctly). Any monsters with melee attacks like Ferroxes, Beastmen, Wendigo, Kobolds, etc will have to go through up to 4 hazardous spaces before attacking him, meaning up to 4 wounds. I say "up to" because monsters may have spawned within the aura or Shiver may have moved toward a crearture in his turn (if the hero player is stupid enought to do that). So, melee attacks againsts him are pretty much useless and makes those monsters look like kamikaze. So, we are left with Magic and Ranged... wich, to stay off of the Aura, must score up to 5 range pts on the dice if they are not already inside the aura. And that's pretty tough to obtain.

So the other Heroes just have to stay bunched near Shiver and will receive good protection as well. Of course, freak accidents like boulders and such can happen but they do not happen every turn and sometimes never in a game. After a few games, I noticed the Aura 4 ability is particularly strong when the hero is in rooms, open spaces or long straight corridors, as monsters have more difficulty spawning near him.

So, I'm beginning to resent this guy. Not hate, just resent. Does anyone feel the same as me about him?

Oh and I forgot to mention: make him drink an invisibility potion and he becomes almost invicible as the only poor creatures who manage to successfully attack him will have another 1 in 3 chance of failure.

Aura x means it does x damage to models entering adjacent spaces. I once thought that it was x spaces away, too.

Thanks for the reply. Where have you seen this explanation in the rules? Just want to be sure. By reading this forum, I'm sure many people also think it means "extends 4 spaces away". I would be very glad if it was 4 wounds per adjacent spaces entered. That character would be more fun to play.

Aura was revised in RtL.

In the RtL Rue Book a diffrent Aura Discription than in the Basic Rules.

And this chane was not transfered to ToI :(

The new Text for Aura is:

Aura
Each time an enemy figure moves into a space adjacent to a
figure with the Aura ability, it immediately suffers 1 wound
(ignoring armor) for each rank of Aura possessed. Aura inflicts
no damage when the figure that possesses the ability moves
adjacent to an enemy figure, however.

This comes form RtL Rulebook Page 28

Ladoik, thank you very much. I do not own RtL so I completely missed that of course. So that makes him a great Hero, not an annoying one ;)

If you are playing regular Descent, then Aura works as described in the JitD rulebook. Aura in RtL was one of many specific ability changes meant for RtL.

Uh...Aura in JitD doesn't have ranks at all, which means the ability "Aura 4" would be impossible.

I suppose an argument could be made that maybe it's supposed to just be "Aura" in JitD (1 damage, 1 range) and "Aura 4" in RtL (4 damage, 1 range), but that seems pretty far-fetched to me. It seems more plausible that they made the obvious generalization of the Aura ability and forgot to copy the new text into ToI.

we played with shiver this weekend.

we played it that aura 4 means 4 damage moving into adjacent squares.

range of 4 doing 1 damage for each square would be rediculous.
