Rank 7 RT group

By Larkin, in Rogue Trader

Apparently a Rank 7 RT group can take on a Hive Tyrant and 5 Tyrant guards and make it out without a single Burnt Fate point.

Surprised the hell out of me, though I did manage to get my Explorator down to 0 Fate points which is a first. I was 1 hit from killing him too. Drat…

Thats actually not that supprising, given thank they are they have the XP equivalent of rank 3 space marines. By rank 7 they most likely have acess to a large amount of fire power. Such as melta weapons.. Now admitely, they are likely to be highly squishy.

What kind of group was it exactly and what were the circumstances of the fight?

The group was working on scouring a Space Hulk to retrieve a Battleship. This particular hulk is a rather large one and host to Orks and the Tyranids as well as a chaos portal. For the "history" the Orks found it to be basically heaven, fighting off the chaos incursions everyday, and the Tyranids were slowly building up Bio mass from the Orks and corpses leftover from the fighting. Into this stalemate came the RT group, well kitted out with troops and even a squad of space marines.

Through adventures the groups closes the portal, decimates the Ork horde and then goes to deal with the Nids. The nids are clever, setting traps and actually killing one of the marines on their scouting mission, and they're ensconced in the Engine room of the Battleship, growing their own biomass via orkoid fungus. So the team plans a frontal diversion, attacking with Space Marines and house troops as a distraction to slip in the RT group.

This group is a Combat and Leadership RT, a Combat Astropath, a Combat Explorator, and a Navigator who is no slouch. In the course of former adventures they each received a boon of the High Lords of Terra. Two of those come into play for this battle, one being Terminator Armour for the Explorator and the other being Training with a Space Marine Librarian for the Astropath, which resulted in said Astropath learning Smite.

The group had encountered two other groups of Nids before getting to the Engine core, one which was easily dispatched due to proper preparations, and the other which was harder due to limitations I placed on the group. Some were injured and half were out of regular fate points. The Tyrant group were all armed with Boneswords with the additional quality of Razor Sharp straight out of the Deathwatch books.

Highlights of the fight include the Tyrant charging the Explorator after Stunning both the Navigator and the Astropath, said Astropath having pushed 2 smites and destroyed 2 Tyrant Guards in 2 rounds. The Explorator going to town with his Thunderhammer hitting for 50+ (furious assault) every round and the Tyrant "cheating" and draining his life away 1d5 at a time. The Tyrant then lightning attacked and attempted to beat it's way past his armour/toughness so I could use the Drain Life on the bonesword. Made the Explorator spend all his fate points to keep healing as he would have died otherwise. I was very glad to show that there are ways around his protections, and the looks on all of their faces during the combat were priceless. Said explorator eventually killed the Tyrant right as the two psykers were coming out of stun. But the best moment followed, as the troops outside were being held back by a Zoanthrope, which the group walked out and the Navigator killed with a single Lidless Stare. It was a hilarious moment and worth all the setup.
