I successfully passed a Celeano skill check which awarded me the Encounter Card with this message: "If the Ancient One awakens, you may discard this card to cancel its attack for the entire round". Must this card be used on the very 1st turn after the AO awakens? I'm guessing the answer is yes by the wording on the card. But if you can use it any subsequent round of combat, then can you wait to see what kind of attack the AO selects before committing yourself to the playing of this card?
Cancelling Ancient One's Attack

I think you can decide on which round of Final Combat you want to use it. After all, the wording on the Items that give you the same attack-cancelling effect is much more clear and without a doubt do not force you to cancel the first round.
Is the encounter the one where you overhear the Ancient Ones discussing?
Yeah, attack cancellers can be played in any round of the final combat. Just remember that you cancel the attack, but not the passing of time. Let me make an example: you're facing Yig. First round: speed +1, then speed +0, and so on. If you spend your attack canceller on the first round of the FB, you clearly don't have to roll, but during the second round of FB, when Yig attacks, your speed is at +0 even if Yig didn't attack on the first round.
And I'd say that you have to choose whether to use this card or not at the beginning of the AO attack, before drawing cards, and so on

I've never before had the luxury of gaining 2 Outer World cards in the same game (even if I'm able to only keep one of these cards).
Never happened here, in more than 160 games… ::shudder::

I play that all "attack canceler" items are used RIGHT when the AO attacks. This means that you don't decide to use it before drawing an Epic Battle card, if applicable.

That's incredible to learn this is such a rarity. And I use all of the Other World cards from every single expansion because I own them all & use them all in every game. Sadly I will never even get close to the lofty heights of 160 games because I play AH only 1 turn a day (always solo) & only 7 months a year while I'm in Canada. It takes me about 3 weeks to finish a game & then I start the next one right away.
Yeah, I see what you mean, even a single game is really time demanding. But still, it's impressive your passion for this game :-)

To me, 24 games seems like a lot but wow 160 is truly impressive!!!!! Speaks volumes about the replay value & continued freshness of AH. I've played complex boardgames & cardgames both solo & face-to-face for over 30 years (it's my #1 hobby) but nothing beats the excitement & creativity of AH. And probably like you Julia, I've added a ton of fan-based material to my AH Universe so it never gets stale or predictable.
That's very true. Arkham has a special magic :-)
Yeah, I think I agree with you, Tibs. At first, I felt inclined to argue the opposite, but then I realized that the players could be cheated of their hard-earned attack-canceller's efficacy by, say, Last Ditch Effort.

This is how I do it:
Whatever's printed under "Ancient One attacks" can be canceled, except, clearly, for "The End of Everything." If it's a card that instructs the players to draw a Sinister Plot card, then I guess you could just cancel that and neither side would make a move that round, but it would be better to draw the actual Sinister Plot card and cancel the plot itself. Maybe it's Rhan-s Torpor card or Bokrug's famous SP card, which you would kick yourself for canceling.
