about the conversion kit..

By Lorenelif, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

OK somebody has probably already addressed this and I missed it , sorry.

What I'm wondering is about the the equipment and magic items and so on from 1st edition. Will there be a conversion kit for those at some point?

Treasures and other cards are not converted. The conversion kit provides updates ONLY for monster and heroes.

Now that I think about it, what about the familiar tokens that were attached to some of the heroes? Will they still be used, does anyone know?

I believe they will be. One of the heroes in the CK that was previewed had his little Pico buddy with him.

So $30 bucks for hero and monster cards only…. that kinda blows…especially since the tiles don't interlock with the new ones…. Most of 1st ed stuff could be converted rather easily I think so hopefully they do so over time. Or give me template for the new cards so I can do it myself.

Treasure and equipment cards were only ever cards - there were no physical parts involved, so there's nothing to convert. It would just be new cards with the same names.

I think most (if not all) of the Act I and Act II equipment cards are new versions of the old treasure cards anyways.

I doubt there will be a conversion kit for them, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a lot of that stuff reappear in expansions for 2e.

If you don't think it's worthwhile, don't buy it.

As for fans converting the rest of 1e's bits into 2e with house rules, I have little doubt that someone will do it sooner or later. Likewise for making blank templates of 2e cards.

What have the tiles to do with it? The purpose of the kit is to allow you to add both heroes and monsters into 2e games. There are a lot of both.

I am personally impressed that all 1e monsters plug so easily into 2e scenarios, which is not something that we have had before.

An expansion that adds 25 new monsters and what… 40 or more new heroes, for $30 or less? Sign me up.

yeah, but if they don't convert the overlord cards (for example) how do you spawn the oldmonsters in the new game? That's the kind of thing I'm thinking about.

Some of the stats would be different. And it would be good for them to look the same as the new cards. Anyway, new Cards with the updated data would be fine with me. Some of them probably wouldn't crossover so it would be adding a portion not all. But right now as I understand things there's no way for the overlord to spawn the old critters in the new game because there's no spawn cards. Has to be some way of fixing that right?

Might be worth it for what you get in the pack, I still want to be able to use all the old stuff by 2e rules though. Most of that would just be reprinting the card on the new format so I don't see why it couldn't happen.

Again, it has to do with being able to USE what I already have bought. Some of us do custom quests. Yes I know I can still use them, it just kinda sux that they don't lock together.

1E monsters get spawned in the same way other monsters do. They can be part of an "open group". See the rules for spawning limitations.

In 2e, monsters don't spawn through OL cards. Instead, each quest has a number of icons which shows what monsters (1e and 2e) you can choose for your open groups. So you will be able to use all 1e monsters in 2e quests with the Conversion Kit. That is just how awesome 2e and this Kit are. You might want to understand how the product actually works before being too critical of it.

Have you read the 2e rulebook at all yet? Monsters are all given properties from a specific list (like "Civilized" or "Woodland.") Each quest also defines which of these properties apply to the map being used. The OL can select his monster groups to use during the quest from among any monsters that have one of the appropriate properties. The properties for 1e monsters will be defined on the 2e monster cards in the CK.

You really think that FFG would give you stats without providing a way to use them?

I've only said this about a million times already, but I'll say it again, just for posterity: Build your map so that a 1e dead-end stump abutts a wall or dead-end stump of a 2e tile. Put a door on the crack and explain to your hero players that the wall here doesn't exist. Problem solved.

Either that or use staircases and special quest-based teleporters to move from map portions built from 1e tiles to map portions built from 2e tiles. It's been a while since I homebrewed anything for a board game, but these sorts of creative solutions ought to be second nature for anyone who takes it upon themselves to kitbash stuff together like this.

If you want FFG to take care of everything and make it all " just work" then you should limit yourself to the quests and materials FFG provides you with. If you CHOOSE to go beyond what they provided you with and make your OWN quests, then you should also be taking responsibility for figuring out how to make it work. You can't have your cake and eat it, too.

Steve-O, I love reading some of your posts. You make me laugh, and basically say what I wanted to, but didn't want to flame on …
