Are the Improved Active Defenses really worth an Advance?

By paulsk, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

The marginal benefit of +2 Black basic defenses to +1 Purple active defenses seems interesting, but it doesn't seem like an obviously worthwhile choice compared to spending an Action advance to get a whole new action to add to your arsenal. Do folks find the Improved active defenses to be worth an advance?

+ 2 Black (average 0.67 Challenges generated)

+ 1 Purple (average 0.75 Challenges generated)

So a slight (0.09) increase in Challenges generated against your attacker, and more chance of the attack Banes and Chaos stars, but is it worth it?

Hi,

The extra bonus effect is probably what makes the action worth buying (+1 soak, -1 recharge on melee card and free manuever for Block, Parry and Dodge respectively)

Its not for everyone I guess, but Ive seen Improved Block and Imp Parry used quite well.

There is more to the difference between
and [bB] than a slight increase in challenges.

Things to consider:

1)
has higher probability of two challenges
2)
has Chaos Star
3) [bB] has a higher probability of No Effect (i.e. all blank)
etc.

Then, add in the bonus effects that No: 12 mentioned, and it makes them worthwhile.
