Silencers on needle weapons?

By BirdofHermes, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

I was very happy to discover that the living errata for RT just got its update this month. I accept all the changes/corrections with enthusiasm. All except one:

  • Silencer (134): Under Upgrades, it lists “hunting rifle.” Replace
this option with “long–las, needle rifle, and needle pistol.”

While the RAW may not give any mechanical stealth benefit to needle weapons the core book fluff clearly states that these weapons are "virtually silent." (pg 128) Furthermore, based on the complementary artwork on the same page, it would be very hard to fit a silencer attachment to the ultra thin barrel of a needle weapon. Shouldn't needle weapons receive their own mechanical benefit rather than have the option of a redundant/impractical modification?

I agree, my understanding from the original RT was that needle weapons were virtually silent. Perhaps a silencer mod takes the noise level down another 30 dB or whatever - making the Per test very difficult even for those with Acute hearing in quiet conditions?

Just make it a -20 on perception tests to detect where its being fired from regardless of whether it has a scilencer or not and with a scilencer the weilder become little more than a demons whisper…
