Ok so I attach flaming sword ". ..cannot have it strength lowered by card effects " to former champion " Former Champion gets -2 STR for each power on him " I am assuming that Former Champion doesn't loose any of his strength when he gains a power; and conversely doesn't gain any icon either. Also if he already has a power on him before flaming sword is attached does the earlier reduction not apply anymore (which doesn't seem right) or is it simply from the point in which the attachment goes on.

My guess would be that at any point FS is placed on him the negatives applied by his own card effect would be nulled out and make him lose any of the additional icons/keywords he had. But I'm not sure.

The effect "gets -2 STR for each power on him" is a constant effect. It is constantly making sure that his STR is lowered. By making it so that his STR cannot be lowered, the constant effect can no longer function, and he's back at his printed STR (plus whatever from other effects you might have.)

I'm not sure why that wouldn't seem right, but that's how it is.
