Event Cost

By Zahrim13, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

My friend and I had a disagreement on how to play the event cost on the card "The Prince's Wrath" (PotS F22). Challenges: Kneel 1 influence to choose 1 character. Until the end of phase, that character loses a Military, an intrigue, and a power icon.

He was saying that you could pay the cost of the card multiple times to trigger its affect and I disagreed because the cost did not include an X.

I did not see anything in the rules on this or the FaQ. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated. Thanks you.

Your friend is incorrect. You cannot trigger an event card more than one time upon it being played.

You're correct that if it said "X influence for X icons" you would be able to use it the way he thinks.

More like "X influence for X characters," judging by the original post.

Point is, playing the event card from your hand is effectively part of the cost for triggering the event's effect. That's why it still goes to the discard pile, even if it is canceled.

So, if your friend wants to trigger the effect of the event card more than 1 time (and he'd have to, since each trigger says to choose a single character), he's going to need to find a way to play it from his hand more than once, not just kneel more than 1 influence, since he will not have paid the full cost for the effect otherwise. Combine that with the fact that you can only trigger 1 thing before it's your opponent's turn to trigger something (so the event card is put into the discard pile before he has a chance to trigger another non-Response effect), and he really doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Thank you very much for you insight. That was what I thought but now I can explain it better then I could before. Thanks again for being so very helpful and quick.
