Revealing new plots during the challenge phase

By Prof_werewolf, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

If I were to win an intrigue challenge by four and discard Rookery of Sunspear to reveal a new river plot card, what are the limitations of that plot card's effect? For example, would I get the gold for the new plot as well as the 'when revealed' effects? Do I also get to trigger the extra effect that comes with Rivers where I can choose another used plot's effects?

"-then if this is your revealed plot card, trigger the 'when revealed' effect of the top River plot card in your used pile."

Yeah, complicated. This dynamic has me a bit confused. I can see it working in the plot phase but I'm not sure if it taking place during challenges changes anything. Thanks

When revealed or passive effects on the plot card as well as a possibly different claim value for future challenges would be the things that would matter for the most part. There are very few instances where the gold and initiative values on the card would matter, but they would only be used for other cards, you would not normally do anything with them (i.e. compare initiative values or collect any gold).

Some examples for fun: Pirates of Orkmont would change depending on the gold value of your opponent's plot (some card effects can force your opponent into a different plot). Ambush from the Plains and Host of the Bear are a couple of cards that look at your initiative value.

Unless you are switching into the river plot that lets you immediately take 2 gold, then you do not get the additional gold. The gold value on a plot is typically only checked once at marshalling to determine how much you recieve. If you switch plots during any other phase the only plot that matters for counting gold (with the exception of the river plot I mentioned that gives 2 immediately) is the one that is your current plot at the beginning of your marshalling as Active Player. The Initiative is also only typically checked at the standard plot window of the plot phase - but Kid Gruesome did mention some good examples where changes in your plot can effect cards in play.

Other than that, yes, when you reveal a new River plot, it is still being revealed so you can use it's "when reveal" effect. Provided you have another river plot already in your used pile you will also be able to use it with whatever restriction is placed on your current plot: such as "last used river plot" or "any river plot."

if you pick a plot that says if you win an int challenge do x would you be able to do the x for the int you just won?

Nope, because if you are already into the " responses " window of the INT challenge, which allowed you to discard the Rookery in the first place, it is already passed the timing that the plot would take effect had it already been revealed. I believe those types of plots are typically handled at the beginning of the passives window, which is before you get to responses .

Although if you'd revealed Let My Porridge Fly as the new plot because of winning an INT challenge while The Tides of War is your revealed plot (and it is Summer or Winter), both the plot rotation and the attachment discard are passive, and therefore would happen.
