Rtl Dungeon Level 9 - The Prison

By Paul Grogan, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Spoiler Alert:

Is allowing the OL to place monsters / spawn monsters in the cells a bit too strong. We're about to play this level and I'm thinking of house ruling that the OL cannot place monsters or spawn inside a cell until the door is opened by the heroes, but wondering what others think.

I say this:

Screw the Heroes.

Hope that helps! gran_risa.gif

I'd say that fits with the spirit of the level.

there is 2 ways to this...its either easy conquest for the heroes or easy conquest for the OL... you make your pick...I know what mine would be...

P.S.: First time I figured I couldn't spawn them in there because of the rule that said, doors can only be open from the outside...later I realised that was ment so the villagers wont open the door.

Think about it this way- there are specific red areas that are where you cannot spawn monsters. These are not red areas. I'm n ot saying they haven't made oversights before, but that seems like it would be a big one if they missed the idea of spawning in the cells.

Hi,

my humble opinion: Placing starting monsters in the cells would be pure cheese and quite silly, so we banned it.

Spawning is different though: The OL has to spend threat and a card to be able to do so, and many spawns only have two monsters, so you can kill only two prisoners with a spawn. And even these two kills are far from guaranteed, if the monsters miss or don't roll enough damage to kill a prisoner each (copper hell hounds or skeletons anyone?). Additionally, the heroes go first and can split up and open all three doors to protect against spawning - risky, but possible, and so an interesting strategic decision to make. So I think spawning inside cells should not be restricted.

Considering the number of other things that slipped through the net, I wouldnt be surprised if this is another one.

Level 27 - no way the leader would ever get summoned
Sorcerer's final battle - no way for the OL to win
etc. etc.

Thanks for your input, I think this is the option I will go with.

but remember the doors can only be opened from the outside...so placing your monsters in there...is abandoning the chance of killing the heroes.

But if I remember right, the XP swing makes this still the better option (if it's allowed).

I agree that spawning monsters in the cells should be allowed, just not placing your starting monsters in the cells.
