Responses by Active Player vs First Player

By phetish, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

So yesterday I was playing a casual came that popped up a problem.

Overview:

I lost initiative so my opponent was the First Player. After his challenges, I started mine. I had 1 card in hand - Terminal Schemes.

After winning an intrigue challenge I was going to play Terminal Schemes (Response: After you win an [intrigue] challenge by 4 or more total STR, choose and kill a non-House Tyrell character.) At the same time, my opponent played Red Vengence (Response: After you lose a challenge as the defender, kneel 2 influence to cancel the claim effect of that challenge. Then, choose an opponent to satisfy the claim of that challenge as if he or she had lost the challenge as the defender.)

Here's the pickle: If my event played first, I got to kill someone. If his event played first, I lost the only card I had in hand.

So, when the Response window opens, whose event goes first? Active Player, or First Player?

I did look at the FAQ but it just said "5) Responses (in clockwise order until all players consecutively pass) are resolved. " But, it didn't say where Responses started.

Opinions?

His event goes first because it is a cancel . Claim cannot be interrupted by anything else, really.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I understand what you are saying, however I am looking for a timing clarification.

Ignore the fact that it was a cancel - let's say 2 players are wanting to play events (ignoring the cards for a moment). Who has the first opportunity to play an event after a challenge winner is determined? Active Player or First Player?

In a framework action window (such as the resolution of a challenge), the first player has the first opportunity to respond. In a player action window (when a player has just taken an action), the next player (to the left, since the game goes clockwise) has the first opportunity to respond. You never get the first opportunity to act or respond by being the active player.

According to the rules, in a framework action window (such as resolving a challenge), the First Player has the first opportunity to play a Response (no matter who the active player is). In player action windows, the player to the left of the person whose action it is has the first opportunity to play a Response.

Or, as the FAQ states it:

" Who gets the first opportunity to play a response?

If the response is to a player action, the player to the left of the person who initiated the action has the first opportunity to respond. Response opportunity then passes clockwise around the table. Note that responses to bringing a card out of Shadows are handled in this fashion, with the player to the left of the person who brought a card out of Shadows having the first response opportunity.

In a Framework Action Window, the 'First Player' always has the first opportunity to respond. Response opportunity then passes clockwise around the table. Note that challenge resolution is a framework action window, so the 'First Player' has response priority regardless of his status as attacker or defender."

Awesome! Thank you. I was looking for answers in the wrong parts of the FAQ :)

Just so I am clear on the original issue, even if the attacking player was First Player (and obviously Active Player), would the defending Martell player who lost the challenge be able to play Red Vengeance as a cancel to the claim effect, before moving on to standard passive effects and response options?

Excellent. That's what I was thinking but wanted to make certain. That makes a Vengeful Kedry that much more incredible! (with use of Quentyn char-genda)
