A question about fighters and fleet supply

By adoseofpain, in Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition

We ran into an interesting dilemma earlier with the core set of Twilight Imperium 3rd.

I had upgraded my fighters so they were independent from the ships that used to carry them and could move with +1. Since earlier the Prophecy of Ixth was granted to me, my fighters effectively from 7 higher.

I decided to spam make those, and my question is this: IF I had a fleet supply of 10, how many fighters could I have there. Is it 10? Is it 20? And what about if I had 5 supply? Could I have 5 in any system or ten?

We decided to rule with the fact that since you get two when you buy them it would count as only 1 supply, kind of like how 2 zerglings in starcraft count as 1 supply. Is this the correct way to go about it?

That is incorrect. One fighter - one fleet supply "point". One should also remember that the fighters can still rely on Carriers to supply them. So with a fleet supply of, say 5, you could have a maximum of 20 fighters. (18 supported by three carriers and 2 in excess of the fighter supply limit)

So with a fleet supply of 5, having 5 carriers with 6 fighters in each would be 30 fighters total. And that's a legal thing to do?

Yes, apart from the fact that there are only 4 carriers available to build. This is due to the fact that the "Advanced Fighters" tech states that any fighters IN EXCESS of a systems fighter support capacity counts towards fleet supply.

I just wanted to correct myself there. It would be 25 fighters. 24 supported by four carriers and 1 in excess. Or you could pack a War Sun full of them as well making it a full 30 fighters with 4 carriers and 1 War Sun.

The sweet thing is that a Federation of Sol player with Advanced Fighters and Prophecy of Ixth would be able to have (4x8)+6=38 fighters with a 7+ hit ratio in one system with the same configuration of carrying ships… Throw in the Cybernetics tech and they hit on 6+…

Yeah, I knew there were only 4 carriers, just wanted to use that as an example. Awesome. This makes me want to amass fighters all day and see what people think.

No denying it's a powerful combo. What's more, if your opponents sit back and LET you build that many fighters, they deserve what's coming to them.

The second I got to the technology and thought of the possibilities I laughed. Then Prophecy of Ixth came up. As Federation of Sol apparently one can have more fighters… God this is making me reminiscent of amassing cheap, medium strength units of starcraft… I love this game more now.

Federation of Sol can have more fighters in their Carriers if they research their racial tech "Mk II carriers". This gives their carriers a capacity of 8 and Sustain Damage…

And this is why the Friendly Fire action card exists.

So many tough fighters and no way to kill them all….a virtually unstoppable fighter fleet. preocupado.gif

Then your opponents do this to you…

1. Action cards like Friendly Fire, then Touch of Genius to do Friendly Fire again then plus more action cards….

2. Your opponents pass the political law, Fleet Restrictions - Players may not have more than 2 of single ship type in a system (including fighters)

3. Signal jam your fighter fleet.

Then 3 opponent players suicide 24 destroyers, 8 destroyers for each player, with ADT for Two Rounds, and wham…..all those fighters are gone.. llorando.gif

There are so many ways to kill your impressive fighter fleet.

It is not a pretty sight to see the fighters get wiped out so easily …….but its loads of fun for your opponents. gui%C3%B1o.gif
