Koronus Bestiary - Worth the wait?

By David B, in Rogue Trader

Technically, they're "extinct"… as much as anything can be in a very big galaxy that has rubbish communication systems, semi-reliable FTL transport and vast sections that are otherwise unexplored or forgotten to the moldering passages of time and (heresy!) most of the Imperium is quite happy to bulls--t its population on a need to know basis.

As a GM, I'd have no worries about some of them at random waking up from the bottom of an oceanic abyss, unfrozen by miners who dig too deep on a distant moon and start running around wrecking all the imperial's junk. On a slightly more epic scale, they're fairly powerful warp-engineers and could just simply have retreated to a bastion deep in the warp itself, gearing up for 'Round 2' and bust out with an "Oh, you though you won?"

At last, they give us some more units for the Yu'Vath, who I use as a background enemy watching Calixis from the darkness.

Do they expand on their existing lore much, or is it still all "they're all gone, they're mysterious, but their stuff wants to kill you"?

Pretty much… but there are now several new things that can try to kill you.

They may play up the warp angle more than they did originally, but I am not sure.

Personally feel the Autarch may have too many wounds. He has 34 (or something like that) which seems surprisingly robust for a roughly man sized guy with no unnatural shenanigans going on.

The WH40K lines have been going in the direction of heaping Wounds on significant opponents rather than just giving them some other method of staying in the fight longer. Unfortunately, it really is just hit point bloat.

So, is this actually out in brick-and-mortal stores? I've been to three different ones looking for it and come up empty-handed…

It is in Los Angeles. I bought my copy over the counter (yes, I know, terribly old fashioned method of acquisition) a week ago.

That's an amusing typo, by the by.

Cheers,

Heh, found it in a store before it got off of backorder.

Looks great so far… cept I can't understand one thing. Why is a wraithlord with a toughness in the 80's and x3 unnatural toughness list it's toughness as 16 in the box and 12 for total toughness bonus? Wouldn't that be 24? Did someone forget how to add or is there some rule that says once you get over 20 TB you start counting backwards?

I really have to think on the possibility that tyranid ships follow the void kraken's "hard to detect" abilities.

I bought this off DriveThruRPG yesterday, but something's up with the second page of the Void Kraken's write-up. The only gameplay stat that's visible is it's Speed, everything else is whited-out. Same with whatever that is in the top-right of that page (can't tell if it's supposed to be a sidebar or another piece of artwork but it's just a white box in my file). This happened to anyone else? Should I try and re-download the book?

I think it's a problem with the source file itself; I'm having the EXACT same problem; redownloading doesn't work either.

Might give it a re-download next weekend, see if DriveThru's fixed it.

A bit unrelated…but has anyone used the Xenos Generator yet? Would be very interesting to see and example of the critters that can be spawned from it.

I tend to come up with some nice stuff like this:

Armored turtle like beast

Herd beast, enormous, lethal defense, armored, amphibious

ws 24, bs -, S 50, T 55, Ag 15, Int 16, Per 30, WP 40, Fel -, wounds 24

Armor 5, Shell Spines(1d10+3R), bestial, natural weapons(bite,1d10+5R), quadruped, sturdy

…and then a bunch of other beasts that I can't quite figure out how things work together.

Product's been updated specifically to correct the error; might as well download it now.

Yeah, got the email about it this morning.

Gotta admit - I was wondering how they were going to make the Void Kraken a plausible threat. I couldn't really see it having ranged weapons as the whole feel of it was that it grabbed ships with its tentacles and having those be able to reach across multiple Void Units sort-of stretched the ol' suspension of disbelief. Making them that hard to detect in the first place was probably the only way to do it well. Plus it maintains the feel of the Kraken regardless of setting where it comes up out of nowhere to grab your ship and pull it into the depths.

Not savvy enough on the space combat rules to see how dangerous this thing otherwise is, though. How hard would it be to kill once you located it and weren't currently being munched on?

Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Wel my copy finally arrived at my FLGS yesterday along with the copy of Honour the Chapter and, after having a brief skim through it, I like what i've read so far particularly the Veiled Deceit in the denizens of the Warp section.
