Dreadfort and The Kindly Man

By lahomen, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Kindly Man: If The Kindly Man would be killed, instead attach him to your House card as your only agenda with text: 'Response: After you win an or challenge, choose a non-unique character in any dead or discard pile and put it into play under your control. At the end of the phase, discard that character if it is still in play. (Limit once per phase.)'

The Dreadfort: Response: After you play or take control of a House Bolton character with STR 3 or higher, draw 1 card.

If I use Kindly Man to put a Bolton of STR 3 of higher into play, do I draw?

FAQ 4.4:

"Play" and "Put into Play" Character, Location, and Attachment cards are “played” from the hand during the marshalling phase, by taking a player action and paying their gold cost.

Event cards are “played” by placing the card on the table, paying the specified cost, and triggering the effect.

"Put into play" effects are not considered to be "played." Similarly, when a card is "put into play," it does not trigger any "when played" effects, and vice versa. Both, however, would trigger effects that occur when a card "comes into play” or “enters play.”

tl; dr: Alas, no.

Correct in that The Kindly Man's "put into play" effect will never meet the "play" play restriction of The Dreadfort. If you take the Bolton out of your own discard/dead pile, you will never be able to trigger The Dreadfort.

However , if you use The Kindly Man to take the Bolton out of an opponent's discard/dead pile, you could trigger Dreadfort under the "take control" play restriction….
