Chicago Area 2012 Regional Report

By zachbunn, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

This past Saturday, twenty players gathered at the regional being held in Mt Prospect, Illinois for the Game of Thrones LCG. I was in town and decided I’d stop by and spend the Saturday meeting new players and doing my best to earn a wooden Targaryen house card, something I was unable to do at the Tulsa regional.

Earlier this morning, I posted a full report with pictures to my blog on Team Covenant. You can see the full post here ! Unfortunately, I had to leave just after the conclusion of Top 4, so if anyone knows who ended up winning (Kevin or Brett) I would love to know.

Thanks again to Kevin for hosting a great event and for the local community for being so nice to an outsider. I had a blast!

Zach,

Wow, that is an excellent report. It is very interesting to hear someone's perspective of a match from the opposite view. Your deck was quite awesome, and I agree; whoever got out their burn quicker was going to win the game one way or the other. Also, once my deck gets a maester out with the bronze link and starts recurring Flame-Kissed, it starts rolling pretty well. I was VERY lucky that you did not have two shadows cards in your initial hand. If you had, I think the game would have gone very differently….

As for the finals, I ended up winning against Brett in a tough and even match. Again, I got my burn early and was able to keep his character presence pretty low. Brett is an excellent player (as well as being a nice guy) and I was lucky to win.

Thanks again for making it out to the event, Zach. We were glad to have you. If you are representative of the Tulsa meta, it must be a great group of class-act players

Congrats Kevin! You had a really interesting build. I'd love to see your deck list. That Flame Kissed recursion was silly. I was so frustrated I couldn't burn Aemon… Good work again on the big win.

Zach, it was a pleasure meeting you, however briefly. Thanks for coming out. Sorry you got away before we could convince you to come out and have a drink afterwards.

Thanks also for the excellent TR. The pictures really add a nice depth.

For the sake of completeness/accuracy, your first round opponent was Tony (aka tofubones on these boards) and your third round opponent was Brian,(aka goshdarnstud on these boards) not Ryan. The reason Matt's Greyjoy was such an odd build was because Luke Reed put it together. ;)

I hope to see you at GenCon!

The pleasure was all mine! Sorry I couldn't stay for drinks. I have lots of good friends in Chicago from other games I've played and I promised to go with them long ago. Had I known drinks were planned, I definitely would have scheduled differently. Next time I suppose!

That being said, which IRL person were you? Learning names was tough enough, let alone forum handles!

Zach

I'm Mike, and was the one wearing the "Shenanigans" shirt and playing the Stark Knights/murder deck that fared rather poorly. :)

Ah, yes. I remember seeing your deck and thinking, "man, I really don't want to play against stark!". They are fairly burn resistant to be honest.

I feel like wildlings, lannister, and stark armies are the tougher things to deal with as burn.

And for the sake of completeness, I should point out that Matt "TheMountainThatPwns" Pries and Aaron "AY" Young showed up at the tournament not having played in more than 3 (almost 4?) years. I shameless ripped off regional winning Stark & Greyjoy decks to fit their preferences (and memories). Matt was playing the deck that Jeremiah "Shives McShivers" Duggan won the Iowa Regional with. I think he added 1 copy of Maester Kerwin and a copy of Street of Silk. I give them credit for going a combined 3-8 given the level of competition (even if I had to take one of those losses). :) & :/
