Favoured Weapon?

By Dulahan, in Only War Beta

So, all the example regiments have two Favoured Weapons listed in their writeups. But when I'm going through and making custom Regiments, I can't find anything of the sort in the process. Am I just completely spacing out on it and missing it? Or is this something that was an oversight and needs to be added to the Regimental Creation rules?

My guess is that the favored weapons are just a piece of flavour text and they have no real impact on the game mechanics. In the 4th edition IG codex there was something similar, but with no real game effect.

Except they do, you can requisition them easier. Which is a good thing.

Now it's a rather obvious thing when creating a regiment for sure, since it's just "Pick two support weapons as favored" - but it's not spelled out, which I think it should be. Possibly even with a list of what qualifies.

Concur, a table should give you some options for favoured weapons and it should be narrowed somewhat by the choices made when creating a regiment. A focus on infiltration and close combat makes a shotgun a reasonable choice, heavy bolters less so.

A table referencing common choices makes sense. One which would somehow dictate the choices would likely depreciate the system.

I look at the favored weapon entry as a way to add completely custom elements to a regiment outside of the otherwise regimented (no pun intended) rules for their creation. Given all choices for creating a regiment are subject to GM approval then reasonable decisions and compromise should be able to be made. Only War , more than any other of the 40K systems, seems more collaborative in nature.

Looking carefully, it seems like it is One Heavy Weapon, and One Support weapon.

That is correct. Per this thread in the Proofreading subforum, N0-1 states it is intended to be one heavy weapon and one support/special weapon.

Sorry, I missed that part of the rules.

I think it should be part of the listed rules, and the 30 points you get to amend your standard kit should include provisions to buy one (or both) of those favoured weapons per squad.

So you could have something like:

Favoured Weapons
Each Regiment has a set of favoured weapons, weapons that most factor into their strategies and combat operations. Each Regiment should choose one Basic and one Heavy Weapon from the following list:

  • Flamer
  • Grenade Launcher
  • Meltagun
  • Plasma Gun
  • Man-Portable Lascannon
  • Autocannon
  • Heavy Bolter
  • Missile Launcher
  • Mortar

And then on that big long list of what you can buy for your 30 points to amend your kit:

Add one favoured heavy weapon to each squad – 12 points
Add one favoured basic weapon to each squad – 8 points.

Or 5 and 10 points – whatever feels more balanced.

Except for the fact that the Weapon Specialist can already choose to take a flamer or meltagun (among other things), this isn't a bad idea. It might work to add to both the Heavy Gunner and the Weapon Specialist an option to take their regimental preferred weapon if it is not normally listed as one of their options.

I just do "One Heavy Weapon and One Non-Lasgun Basic Weapon"

It allows us to take weapons from other books.

Lets take this opportunity to expand on the rules a little. Just as a suggestion.

Remember those chapter specific special weapons in DW? What if it was something more like that. Except not so much of a relic, more regiment specific, and less special. Tieing directly in with the favoured weapon ethos. Because lets be clear. If this game is any less cool than DW. It would be a wast.

How about this: At the start of the requisition roll for a regimental favored weapon they get a +3 (baring in mind the +10 for well-provisioned doctrine). They then get to roll however many times (1-2) on the 'weapon histories table'. Similar to the "armour histories table" in DW.

You could also put a section describing that if the character has already used his weapon in a previous campaign he may select one and only one "weapon history" from the table.

These rules will be distinct form the weapon customisation rules as they could be dependent on terrain (trench, jungle etc) or do things like give a +3 initiative bonus. However weapon quality should probably stay unchanged.

Afterall, if theres anything that should have a history in an imperial guard regiment, its heavy and assault weapons.

This will make them extra valued by the squad, and should they be lost grave consequences will ensue.

Im gonna post this in house rules to give it maxiumum visibility. If you wanna direct your criticisms at it there.
