So, I've understood what "Nedly" means for a long time. I've even used the term myself. it would be quite difficult not to get it from the context. However, what I'm wondering is where it came from. Who first started using it and why Ned?
Nedliness
Way back in the early days of the CCG, the designer wrote an article talking about the three general player archetypes as he saw them. He named them after characters in the books upon which the game is based:
1. "Shagga," the power gamer. (The CCG player who likes big, strong cards and crushing combos. He's the one most likely to flit from game to game depending on what strikes his fancy and is popular at the time.) - Named for a somewhat peripheral character in the books who was essentially this big strong guy who fought without a lot of sophistication.
2. "Ned," the story gamer. (This is the guy who picked up the game because of the books and likes cards, mechanics and game situations that are reminiscent of things from the books. He's the guy for who flavor plays the biggest role.) - Named for Eddard "Ned" Stark in the books, a person who was defined by a sense of honor and correctness.
3. "Jaime," the strategy gamer. (This is the competitive guy who picked up the game because he liked the way it played. He may or may not have read the books. Tends to be a control player and likes cards and combos that are efficient, powerful and give him an edge.) - Named for Jaime Lannister, an anti-hero in the books who has a pretty well defined moral code, but doesn't balk at much in achieving his goals.
Others will have a slightly different take on the archetypes and, of course, most people tend to be a combination of them rather than purely one or the other. But in the end, that's where the term "Nedly" came from as a reference to how "true to the source material" things are.
~Plus, didn't we eventually add a Sansa player type?
We should.
Sansa would be a player who like Ned is greatly influenced by the books in their deck building but rather than creating decks that mimic events or factions or chapters in the books, they instead exclude cards or even refuse to play Houses based on their dislike of actions in the book.
We've got someone like that in our group. Will play Targ, but not include anything with Daeny's name on it, and won't play Greyjoy or any Greyjoy card at all.
This leaves me confused. I am the player type you would call Sansa but on the other hand I hate the girl...
Doesn't everyone hate the girl? She's a fraking retard. Granted she gets better in the last two, but still...she's Sansa.
That makes good sense, though. Good to read it, it's sort of like the old Magic Timmy/Johnny/Spike archetypes but a bit different. I had always picked up the Nedly stuff as meaning flavorful in the sense of the books. Sadly, he was also kind of dumb. His honor was great and true, but it blinded him from the ay the world really works, and he may personally have doomed the realm by it.
All that said, I may well be a Sansa, by her designation. I've really never gotten into Bara, mainly due to strongly disliking Stannis and all that R'hllor crap. But, also, I've never really liked their mechanic. I'm much more a Stark or Greyjoy player, which makes me rather un-Nedly
. I'm a mix of Sansa and Jaime, by those archetypes.
Thanks, gang for the info.
Funnilly enough I was just wondering about the origins of 'nedliness' just a few days ago, so this thread really hit the mark. Also the similarity to the MTG archetypes is fun.

Well, she was never a favourite`, but I don't hate her
As for the types: I'm guessing I'm a Jaime kind of player, with a touch of Ned and Sansa mixed in... The game does have some additional attraction due to the theme, and I'm more likely to start playing with the factions I like from the books.
Ah... but there is a difference between "more likely to start playing with," and "I will never play that House! They killed/betrayed House X!"
