Maester Wendamyr + King's Pavillion + Flame-Kissed

By eloooooooi, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hey guys, I think I might need some help on this one:

I control Maester Wendamyr, who has been Flame-Kissed, and a King's Pavillion. I just lost a M challenge and decide to choose Wendamyr as my victim, then save him and use 2 influence to stand him right away. Since he's been knelt and reaches 0 STR, does he burn to death?

I'm asking this because I think the killing effect on F-K is passive and it would be triggered once Wendamyr gets his STR back, so he is not 0 STR anymore. I'm a bit confused.

Thanks!

You're right. The kill effect resolves as a passive in step 4 of the action window, while the kneeling and standing of Wendy all happen during the save response in step 2 of the action window. By the time FK is checking if Wendy's STR is low enough for him to be killed, he is standing again.

Yeah. His save effect removes him from the terminal state so it's all legal. Hooray!

You misunderstand. He never was in a terminal state. He's killed for MIL claim, not by FK, and he's saved from MIL claim, not from FK. He is at STR 0 for a short time, but he stands before FK's kill effect kicks in. FK never sees that we was STR 0 for a second there, because it didn't look at the time, so to speak.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that even if the "kill at 0" did kick in before the stand part of the save effect, you would still be allowed to use Wendamyr's ability to save him from the claim effect of the military challenge you just lost. The limitation on saves against terminal effects does not prevent you from putting a character into a terminal state as the result of saving it from a non-terminal effect. It is perfectly legal for you to save a character from military claim - only to have it die for Flame-Kissed as an eventual result.

Thank you guys for your help!

You know, I read the fuller explanation on the difference between the constant -1 STR reduction and the passive "discard at 0" on Threat, but this still is a brief blow to the mind. I'm happy that my grasp on the rules intracacies is regrowing.
