Too dependent on Miner of Iron Hills?

By Ranger of the Force, in Strategy and deck-building

I am thinking that the two slots I use for him in my deck could be used for something else but I can seem to take him out because of Caught in a Web (Hate that card) and I've heard bad things about other condition attachments in other sets. How do you deal with nasty condition attachments without the miner? I have a single core plus HfG, JtR, and RtM. My current deck is Lore/Spirit (Lore heavy) with no splashes. Thoughts?

the only other way to deal with this is prevention- so cards like test of will, elanor, and even denethor to peek and send it to the bottom- in fact i would only tend to rely on miner as a last resort

rich

I run two Test of Wills and use Denethor, plus three Sound of the Earths ( I think that is what they are called), and a Henamarth Riversong. Do you think the miners are overkill? They are decent blockers.

Personally I tend to run Miners in any deck with the Lore resources to pay for them. They also have the advantage that they can remove the nasty card "Sacked!" (from Conflict at the Carrock), which cannot be cancelled by Test of Will/Eleanor.

no i suppose not, i would never build a dwarf deck without one, or a lore deck, but it depends on what you class as overkill- i mean you can never have too many backups

Overkill as in excessive and taking up slots that more benificial cards could use. In playing PTM a few times after posting, I am of the mind that they should stay. I used Denethor to get rid of condition attachments and unexpected courage to work around Caught in a Web if it showed up unexpectedly. They are decent blockers and cheap ones at that, and they can stick around a bit given the right enemy, but more importantly I have only one UC so I think you are right in that you can't have too many backups provided you have the room for them.

It's one of those few cards I have never tried in a deck. Surprisingly maybe. Even at the times of Caught in a Web being a great terror to my deck, I still wouldn't include them because they would be nigh useless in other quests. And even when Conflict at the Carrock broke out, I still refused to use them. And I have to say I have hardly missed them although I see their potential worth, the worst condition being Freezing Cold perhaps, that one actually cost me more often than Sacked! I believe.

Watchful Eyes is pretty nasty too - in my experience the main way in which Into the Pit can become difficult is if you get both Watchful Eyes early. WE is a nicely designed card IMO - thematic, and presents a tricky little choice - use your heroes and face additional dangers, or not.

Miner is also a lot more useful with Dain (1WP and 2 attack) or in decks that can globally boost WP (eg Broken Sword and Faramir).

Yes, I really like the (thematic) design of Watchful Eyes or Cave Torch. From my experience, the Eyes were never too threatening but I have played the three Khazad quests less than anything else, they'll probably feature again in FoS and SaF.

And I can see this Lore Miner being useful, the conditions have just never pushed me enough to include him over someone else that has repeatedly proven his worth (but I also know I am bias with some of my favourites).

It also has one of the best art designs so far!

I agree. The miners are good blockers, and if nothing else you can commit them to quests, leaving others for the fighting. Denethor can be helpful for taking "caught in a web out" before it gets to you, but I also find him a good blocker. Keeping the two miners and throwing Denethor in there is more than enough to protect you from the rare instance of being "caught in a web".

Personally I would use one or the other (Denethor or the miners). I don't think you need a whole lot to protect you from one or two cards in the whole encounter deck. Think how rarely it will come up. I hope this advice helped.
