Essentially, he is saying your status as "winner/loser of X challenge" is an effect of the challenge itself. And, more to the point, he is saying that the "X" in that is determined by the challenge resolution, not by its initiation.
I think he has convinced himself that because Double Bluff says "effect of winning the challenge" instead of "claim effect" that the two terms must mean different things. Game context, timing construction, and standard English argue against it, but whatcha gonna do?
