Questions, questions!

By GreenFlame, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hello again!

I have some questions that I couldn't find on the forums ><

1- When you use the Find Gate spell, can you actually return to the location/street you want to, or you have to come back to a gate that match the OW where you were?

2- When Atlach-Nacha stirs in her slumber all Mystic cards are discarded without their special effects taking place. How does this work with the new Act Deck from MH? Act 1 can only start from 'The Next Act Begins!' cards when Atlach is the AO?

3- Does cards like Environment or Blight still apply its effects? In the case of Joey the Rat is pretty obvious, but what about The Dean and so?

PS: Yesterday me and my friends played against Yibb-tstll. It was a bloodbath. KiY was the Herald, and the Intermission card was drawn when we had 2 sealed locations and Yibb-tstll had 5 doom tokens, so we decided to draw 2 blight cards. The first one was The Dean, so one of the Elder Signs was broken (and we had A LOT of exhaust-to-use items…), and the second one was Oliver Thomas…who increases by 1 Clue Token the clues needed to seal a gate. This, in addition to Yibb-Tstll (you can have a max of 5 clue tokens) left us naked and slapped. Also, the following turn was a gateburst in the only other location sealed aplauso.gif . By the time the AO awoke, he had a combat modifier of -18. Cool Story, Yibb.

  1. Find Gate is just an early gate escape. If there are multiple legal openings, you can choose one to exit from. If there are none, you are lost in time and space.
  2. Mystic cards simply don't apply their special effects, and so don't replace already-in-play environments. Thus they still trigger for Atlach (this same stipulation applies to Ithaqua and Tsathoggua). Where it gets a little hairy is with Cthugha, who straight-up discards Weather cards when they're drawn. Do Weather cards still trigger acts for him? I'd say "yes."
  3. I think you're going to have to clarify this. Are you asking if drawn Blights still apply in final combat? Yes they do. The herald is discarded, so you can't get any more blights, but the ones already out are going to affect you and your team.

Everything solved! Thank you very much, Tibs!

I'm not entirely sure whether we've already discussed this, so I'll bring it up again: Tibs, are you sure about the Mythos discarded by Cthugha still counting? By my reasoning, "draw" in this case means "draw and apply". If "draw" really just means "draw", then you have tons of situations where you're drawing Mythos for frivolous reasons which can then become deadly. Glaaki becomes MUCH more dangerous if the Mythos cards you draw for Servant placement trigger the Acts. Daoloth can trigger the Acts during final combat. Encounters such as this Inner Sanctum one ("A glass orb in this chamber contains a swirling fog. As you handle the sphere, the misty shroud parts to divulge what seems to be the future. Draw the top five cards from the Mythos deck and put them back on top of the deck in any order you desire.") become potentially devastating.

Walk,

I see your point ~ for the purpose of the AO's abilities, it's only those that are "in play" and not simply drawn is the way I've played it, as there's no definitive guidance.

No, I'm not entirely sure of my Cthugha conclusion. But for what it's worth, my reason for "yes" is quite simple:

In a non-MH game of KiY, acts are triggered by specific Mythos cards. If you were playing against Cthugha, you'd just skip past the Weather cards, thus making Acts slightly more likely. If we say that Weather cards still count toward MH Acts with Cthugha, then acts will be slightly more likely, which mirrors the "original." If we do NOT do this, then the only way to get the last act out is a "Next Act Begins" card, and we all know how unlikely that is if you're playing with sufficient expansions (i.e. more than one).

As far as the Glaaki thing goes, I figure the best way to resolve that conflict AND this one is to say that MH Acts (and by extension, Ghroth's ancillary ability and related such things) trigger when you draw a Mythos card with the intent to resolve . Mythos cards drawn for things like, "draw and move to the depicted location" or "draw and ignore everything except the gate opening / the monster movement" or "draw and place a monster at the depicted location" are not drawn with the intent to be resolved. They're just being used as a randomizer. Thus they will not affect MH Acts and Ghroth in a negative way.

Hmm…fair point. I'll probably still play with weather cards not triggering Act III under Cthugha, but then, that's at least partly bias against Act III, which is by far the least fun way to lose a game.

Decisions, decisions.
