Corrected Map - Intellectual Property Issues

By J3W, in Dark Heresy

The map of the Calaxis Sector in the book contains numerous errors, and I see that there is a large corrected version for download on the site here.

I'd like to have the map printed in color, maybe even enlarged for my players, but I've been turned down by the printers due to it being intellectual property. Any ideas on how I can get this thing printed?

If I remember correctly the old black industries site had the you may copy and print this stuff for personal use disclamer on their maps and handouts page.

FFG does not, however they should be operating under the same or similar licensing conditions.

Your best bet is to mention what you want to FFG and see if they wont either put up the disclaimer on the web page or send you the info in an email.

Then take that to the printer and show them that you are allowed to get a copy of it. A pain I know but this is a GW license we are talking about so it is to be expected.

FFG does not, (...)

Okay, let me get this straight

"Yes, the book you bought contains errors on this page"
"Yes, we worked them out and corrected them"
"Yes, they are available on our website"
"No, we will not allow you to print them for private use"
"Yes, this means you are only allowed to watch them online, on your computer"

Could some one from FFG answer to this, please? I hope that there is a missunderstanding! Thank you.

But ofcause its a misunderstanding. FFG would not have put those corrected maps online if not for printing for personal use.

However I agree we should have FFG make it official

I just "framed" myself to get the attention of a moderate for this. Hopefully, this will result in an answer...and not in a "kick-ban" of my nick from the board. :)

I thought fair use laws would allow you to have it printed for private use?

Copyrighted material should have some sort of disclaimer (often seen on character sheets for example) just to avoid a know-it-all printer employee from deciding not to do your job. I took a "printer-friendly version" of a map in once which even had it clearly labelled above the map itself and apparently those three words weren't enough to convince the printer that it was fine for me to have one printed.

The printer shop guys where you are living seem to be different breed then our own around hear. Frankly, people could start to copy whole book sections without anyone doing anything about it.

Where are you? I'm in the UK and got an A2, laminated copy printed on the net somewhere which we use all the time. If you're in the UK (or EU, I guess), I could dig out a link to the company which made it.

voidstate

even if he isn't, I'm in the UK and would appreciate that link.

I'm in Russia, and I had no problems printing the map. Though our local shop would probably photocopy secret military files without a second thought. We find it convenient to have two rulebooks when playing board games (WoW, Descent) in a large group, so I printed those too. And I met two weirdos who had pirated D&D player's handbooks, despite the original books being less expensive to buy. (Must have rolled 6 for Intelligence).

Here's an actively bad idea: inserting a fake disclaimer. Doing this to copyrighted stuff is highly illegal (regardless of whether or not the document in question is released for private printing) and morally BAD. Not "photographing in a museum" bad, but "kicking a puppy" bad. (Might be sort of morally ok for "paper abandonware", that's why I mention it.)

It was from here: 1ClickPrint .

Look under "large format laminated posters". The map printed beautifully, and at only £12 with free delivery, was a bargain.

Hi Gang!

The answer is that you have permission to copy and print the map of the Calixis Sector for personal use.

Just an update:

I found a site online that let me upload the image and choose a print size. Fullsizeposters.com lets you choose a variety of sizes, but have a special for a 24" x 36" for only $9.99. I could have gone bigger, but the special $10 price was too good to pass up.

The quality is really good, it comes printed on thick HP photo paper.
