How do you gamble?

By Fenderstat, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

So I want to build a catalogue of gambling games that my players can play to represent the diverse number of games in the Empire. I'll post how I do it and I am keen to see how you do it. If you like post the positives and negatives of the system you use.

My Rules - Only good for "story gambling" (getting info, gossiping etc) takes a bit of time and not really good on the fly.

1. Players who wish to play buy in

2. Players roll a d100 and record their answer secretly.

2. Player roll an open 2d intelligence if they want to play fair, or an open 2d skullduggery if they want to cheat. (meta knowledge yes but my players are clever enough not to let that cheating/not cheating open roll effect their gameplay, except for perhaps one player but we usually ignore that guy). If I did it online I probably wouldn't make them show the results if they didn't want to.

3. Players score as follows

Playing Fair: d100 result +10 for any hammers +5 for any boons - 10 for any chaos stars

Cheating: d100 result +10 for any hammers +5 for any boons - 10 for any chaos stars +20 Sigmar's Comet - in addition: 1 chaos star opponents make an intuition check against you to find out your cheating. 2 chaos stars you are instantly found out no tests required.

4. Players can raise or check etc like in a game of poker

5. Winner takes all.

So that's me, know its your turn!

our players gamble rarely, they are more the barfight and booze types.

but when they play they try to cheat. so it's almost always skullduggery checks. they usually play poker. but most times their observation is not the best, so they are the ones to get cheated on.

if they play poker i have them do 2 rolls, one for skullduggery and one for folklore to have them know if they are playing the game right/decently.

if they are cheated on i roll a hidden observation check for them to see if they recognize, if not, they might have the better cards and better roll, but if they failed the INT they lose anyways…tons of fun to have there

Hi,

I use a 2d check against skullduggery(cheating), guile(bluffing) or Intuition(playing fair). For cheats and bluffs I add misfortune based on opposing obs/intu ranks as appropriate. A success keeps you in the game, a failure and you're out for bluffs and fair play, for cheats, well, things can get messy there…. Comets/2boons adds a fortune dice to your next roll, star/2banes adds misfortune, so youre hand can evolve throughout the betting. At the start, and after each roll, participants pay the agreed stake, last man in takes the winnings. Players can fold at any point (if the black dice start mounting up etc).

For well organised casinos I have a 3d base, and some shifty guys with sharp knives nearby to keep a wary eye out for cheats.
