Vengeful- Do I lose with no strength?

By hencook, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

I play Obella Sand with a power challenge of 1. Stark declares no challengers, and kneels Shaggydog to reduce Obella's strength to -1.

I have no strength and therefore did not win the challenge, but have I lost the challenge to qualify for Vengeful? Did both parties lose?

You lose, but vengeful only triggers when you lose on defense.

I don't think that is right.

In the case of an attack with 0 STR and no defenders, I believe that no one wins and no one loses.

on defense

But no one lost this challenge. No one won, so no one lost. It's just like when you tie for dominance. No one "wins," but there is no loser, either. That's why there is a big difference between "lost a challenge" and "don't win a challenge."

According to the rules when forces are equal the attacker wins. So even if you are attacking with power of 0 and there is no defenders you still win this challenge as undefended.

No you don't, because the rules also state that in order to win a challenge, a player must have at least 1 participating character and count at least 1 STR in the challenge.

Very incorrect. You must have positive STR to win a challenge, period.

Since this has come up in two active threads, it's probably worth pointing out that the Core Rulebook explains this concept quite clearly. Page 14:

  • The player whose side has the highest total STR wins the challenge. Tied STR goes to the attacker , as long as the attacker has at least 1 total STR on his side. (A challenge may not be won by an attacker or defender whose total STR is less than 1, or who has no participating characters when the challenge is resolved.)
