Sorry, newb question about power

By Valenswift, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Just bought the core set and been reading the rules in anticipation of our first game but there's something i don't understand.

During the challenge phase, how do you take power from someone's house card when you don't start with any power? where do you get your initial power from for someone to be able to take it?

Sorry if this is a really dumb question.

It's it dumb. To answer the second part first, Power is given to players from an unlimited pool of power but players generaly need 15 to win.

There are three (well 4) general mechanisms that introduce power into the game.

1) unopposed challenges.

2) winning dominance

3) card effects such as renown or plot effects such as into the lists or red wedding.

4) agendas

Ro answer the first question:

In the first round, the first player can ony gain power through unopposed power challenges and card effects because it's is unlikely that the second player will have any power on his/her house card to satisfy claim (unless through card effects/agenda effect) during a power challenge. Additionally generally speaking anytime there is no power on a house card a power challenge will not allow power to be claimed during a power challenge.

Howevr, it is possible that after several unopposed challenges, the first player has power on his/her house card and

Thanks a lot for this.

I assumed that it would be through undefended challenges but i was worried that i was missing an important rule in the set up :P

one more thing, how do you get agenda cards?

This is going to sound snarky but by buying more cards. They are scattered around in various chapter packs and deluxe expansions.

Only two actually introduce more power to the game: siege of winterfell ( found in the stark box) gives you two power every time you win a military challenge as attacker or defende and power behind the throne (found in lannister box) which gives your opponent the option to gain a power or draw a card every time they win an intrigue challenge against you.

The agendas are really important cards, Look them up on cĂ rdgamedb..com

Aah right thanks, i'll do that :)
