New player with a couple of random questions (not game play related)

By MiniJunkie, in Dust Warfare

Hi everyone!

I can't say exactly when Dust Warfare caught my eye enough to get me to investigate and eventually buy into it. Probably it was via Frontline Gamer's site or Fire Broadsides. Then I listended to the D6 Generation review and I was sold.

So far I've purchased the Revised Core Set, and a few extra units and an extra walker for each of the Axis and Allies factions. And by purchased I mean I haven't even received some of it in the mail yet.

That said, I've started painting up my first unit from the RCS (allied command unit). I gotta say, these are really nice models. I think Romeo (who sounds like a great guy to game with in the podcast) was a little harsh on the troops. They aren't nearly as "bendy" as he made them sound. I think they are less bendy than I recall AT43 troops being, but that might just be selective memory. They are hard enough to hold nice detail and stand up to handling, and the primer works really, really well! I'm very impressed so far.

I do have a couple of questions:

I don't really understand the relationship between Dust Tactics/Warfare, FFG and this site: dust-models.com/ I'm wondering if anyone could explain how they relate to each other. I also dont really understand what is meant by "Dust 35" or "Dust 48".

I'm wondering if any of you have done "ruined urban" basing. I'm thinking bases with loose rubble and bricks etc. The reason I ask is I think I'd like to do that, but I don't want to re-base the guys so I will be gluing the rubble to the bases. My main question is colors: how do you recommend painting the rubble if it's not grey? Thing is I want to do my Axis in grey tones, so if they are on grey toned bases it might just look like a whole lot of grey. Wondering what nice looking alternatives might be.

Any input or feedback greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Jarrett

Welcome Jarrett!

I'll tackle this portion, and leave your basing question to some of the modeling experts.

Short version answers (Detailed answer would take more time than I have, and is probably more than you want to know)…

Dust Tactics is a Boardgame using the Dust miniatures. Dust warfare is a full-fledged miniature game utilizing the same models.

FFG took over the Dust Tactics game from AEG, iirc, and is the official supplier of Dust, Dust Tactics, and Dust Warfare.

Dust-models.com is Dust Studios web site, and a great place to scout upcoming models, buy Premium pre-painted versions, and get extra odds & ends like decals and dice.

Dust Studios are the designers of the models set in Paulo Parente's Dust universe.

Dust 35 is their line of models in the 1/35 scale (larger). Dust 48 is the line of models in the 1/48 scale, and the scale both Dust Tactics & Dust Warfare are played at.

Hope that helps. Again, welcome. You picked a great game and setting.

Cheers & happy gaming!

Dust Tactics = Board Game w/ miniatures

Dust Warfare = Table Top Wargame that uses the same miniatures as Dust tactics

dust-models.com = The web site of the guy who created the Dust-verse, Paolo Parente. He sells resin and plastic model kits and other merchandise related to his world. FFG is the distributor/designer for Dust Tactics, the mass production version of his collector kits.

Dust 35 = 1/35 scale kits

Dust 48 = 1/48 scale kits (same scale as Dust Tactics)

Brick and stone tends to go grey quick when broken up. I would look at possibly using very light warm greys with hints of browns, yellows and red for rubble. Using warm greys for the rubble and cool greys for uniforms and vehicles should help keep contrast up.

dust models is The manufacturer, producer and creative side of dust tactics they make the rules, models and other intellectual property. FFG promotes and distributes dust tactics and indepenently develops the rules for warfare.k

And that's the detailed answer written far more succinctly than I was thinking of tackling. Glad I left it out, as I would have taken two paragraphs and not described it as well, lol.

It also explains why there are Official DT cards, but not DW cards.

Thanks guys these are awesome answers.

I got excited when I saw 1:48 and O scale comments because I thought "hey there's a hobby place nearby there must be tons of model and train buildings to use as terrain!"

But all the train stuff was N or HO scale, and the model kits were mostly 1:76 or 1:35 :

Basing: Ive mixed these products to make a natural looking basing mix, I also added some aquarium gravel( I like the river rock stuff as its rounded edges look natural) to it as well, this just needs you to apply white glue to the base and dip in the mix, you could also add some clump foliage to at some undergrowth to just you HQ's for in game recognition….Big think Im found of is this does not need to be painted and adds color and contrass to your basing either it be a building or a small base…

I wonder what happened to the building made out of the red bricks! lengua.gif

I like the setup, looks like a nice table to play on.

The allied carpet bombings happened to hit something.

1/48 isn't the most popular scale, but there is stuff to be had if you look. Tamiya makes several 1/48 WWII accessory sets that have infantry, tank crews, crates, tank traps, sand bags, and other diorama accessories. Model/Hobby shops and craft stores, such as Hobby Lobby and Michaels, are good places to check, as are toy shops in outlet malls and flea markets.

Gale Force 9 have quite a few "Battlefield in a Box" terrain pieces that work great for this scale, and Pegasus Hobbies does as well.

I am doing my SSU with urban rubble bases:

A mix of fine and course sand, random plasticard and rod, resing blocks/bricks, and whatever else looks fun from one of my massive terrain bits boxes…
