Noob questions of a 1st time noob.

By Kalahari2, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hello guys i just bought the core set and the expansion king of the sea, and i found myself with a lot of questions. My first couple of questions are this ….

1) How many cards i can put on play ? , Because i saw the tutoria, and in the tutorial they draw 8 squares only for cards on play, is this always like this or i can play all the cards that my gold and table can afford?

2) Which are the diferences between discard and dead decks?, because i saw that neither discard nor dead decks i cant take back to my hand or draw deck. (I know that there are some text abilities that they permit take back one of those to my hand or draw deck, but i dont see any big difference between this 2 decks.

Thx thats is all for today, i think that in a coupple of hours i will have like 10 more doubts

1) There is no limit to how many cards you can have in play.

2) The most important difference between discard and dead is that if there is a Unique character in your dead pile, you can no longer play copies of that card. This does not apply to the discard pile. Also, while there are some card effects that allow you to pull things out of these two piles, retreiving cards from your dead pile is much more rare.

Just to piggy back. The difference between the discard and dead pile is that when a card is discarded, it goes in your discard pile. When a card is killed, it goes in to dead pile. Like Kristoff said, the big problem is when unique characters die and go to the dead pile. Now, if you draw another copy of that character it is useless since you can't play it. Unless, you have a way to get the other card out of the dead pile (back to hand, put in play, move to discard pile, etc).

Characters almost exclusively go in the dead pile. I don't believe there is a game mechanic for attachments or locations to go in there. I know some event cards have the Keyword Deathbound on them. That means that after they are played, they go in the dead pile instead of the discard pile like Event cards normally would go.

As a matter of fact, the rule about uniques in the dead pile is not limited to characters: if there is a unique card in your dead pile, you cannot play or put into play other copies of that card (by title, regardless of text, or even type). The distinction is unlikely to come up often, but Battle of Ruby Ford (an epic battle event) is unique and deathbound, so the situation is definitely possible.

Hello, again and thx for the answers, so here comes my next few question after my first game against my girlfrien

I played house stark, and my girlfriend house baratheon.

1.Attachments

1.1.1 Negative attachments: Is it valid to a player to play an attachment on another player card?, For example Stinking Drunk of House Baratheon (card B69). We believe that that is a valid player action, so that take me to another question….

1.1.2 Motley (B67): Motley saids that if i declare the attached caracter as a defender or attacker or trigger an ability i have to i have to pay gold to the other player participating on challenge, wath i happends if i dont have the gold, could i start the challenge anyway???, i have this same doubt with a baratheon plot card, tha says to pay gold every time i start a war challenge.

1.2.0. For example, eddard stark is on play, and house baratheon put the attachment of stinking drunk on ned, Is there any chance to ned or to house stark of dispose of this or any attachment with negative efects?

1.3.0. Positive attachments or own attachments: Is there any phase or moment, that i can change or sweep my own attachments among my characters?

1.3.1. Positive attachent that kneeling the attachment saves attached character of being kill,. For example flaming sowrd is attached to robert baratheon, and robert baratheon participated as a defender on a war challenge that house baratheon loose, and baratheon player choose to kill robert and save him with the flame sword, is this legal ? because when robert defends the challenge he was kneeled so the question is when you kneel a character with an attachment does the attachment also kneels?

2. Event Cards

2.1. King in the north (S157) The card says play after win dominance kneel 2 starks to have them claim 1 power each, the next phae is standing, so could i stand this 2 characters again? and if i can stan them again, why the card doesn't say if you have to starks on play earn 2 powers instead of kneelinf them because i didn't find any sense on kneeling them if after i could stan them again.

3. Marshaling

3.1. Locations that kneeling them lower the cost of the next card. For example if i play a location that the legend saids kneel this location to lower the cost of the next stark card, Could i kneel this card inmediatly after i played it or i have to wait the next round?

4. Plot cards.

4.1. Valar Morgulis and bran stark: For example i played all my six cards, i have a lots of characters on play included bran stark, and my last plot card is valar morgulis, could i kneel bran when valar morgulis is revealed to save all characters of being kill?

5. General questions.

5.1. I read i think in the forum that two players can play with the same house, is this is legal??, because its looks a little strange if there are 2 starks with 2 robb and neds on each player figthing agains their own copys.

5.2. Mixinx things. Could i play with house stark mixing the deck with lannister house? Which is the recomended amount of cards that each player should have?

1.1.1 Yes, you can play attachments on any legal target. (Is there a reason why you thought you couldn't? Or why you'd ever want to play Motley on your own character?)

1.1.2 I am uncertain as to this answer - but I believe that if you don't have the gold, you are prevented from declaring that character.

1.2.0 There are cards that get rid of attachments, but there's no way for you to get rid of it on your own.

1.3.0 No. (Was there any rule that made you think you could?)

1.3.1 Attachments and characters kneel and stand independently of one another (Lightbringer would be basically useless otherwise, don't you think?)

2.1 Because there are plenty of other effects that require you to kneel characters during Dominance phase. (Imagine if you had 3 copies of that event card in your hand.)

3.1 You can use them immediately. (Is there anything in the rulebook that suggests otherwise? I'm talking about the AGoT rulebook, of course, not the M:tG rulebook.)

4.1 No. The When Revealed effects of your plot card will fully resolve before you have a chance to take other actions.

5.1 Of course it's legal.

5.2 You can play cards that don't match your house, but it costs 2 extra gold to do so. The minimum deck size is 60 cards.

Good luck! And please know that I'm not trying to be rude by asking rhetorical questions, I'm just trying to open your eyes to the idea that if a concept isn't in the rules, you can't do it. I also recommend checking out the FAQ once you've got a few games under your belt.

Note that with a card like Motley, which specifically says "attach to an opponents character," that the text is not specifically allowing you to attach it to an opponent's character (since you can do that anyway), it is preventing you from attaching it to your own.

It really isn't that weird at all. People from the same House in the books work at crosss purposes all the time. And there is always the possibility of an imposter.

Deck construction rules say that the minimum number of cards is 60. Most people stick to about 60-65. Remember also that if a card says "House Lannister only," you can only build it into a deck that uses the House Lannister House card.

Thx, to your answers …..

Here i have a couple more …..

1) Flamming sword tha gives vigilant, this card came with my core set on baratheons, but the only card with the legend vigilant is this one :S

2) I still no understanding brans function, i think that he sucks, does somebodry have an example of bran being useful?

3) One silly quiestion more, on dominance the strength is the one that figures on the str icon or we have to add all the pasive efects like locations, direwolf on kenell master and etc ???

A few notes:

Here is "Lightbringer" http://www.cardgamedb.com/index.php/GoTCards.html/_/core-set/lightbringer-core which has the keyword Vigilant. Not to be confused with "Flaming Sword" http://www.cardgamedb.com/index.php/GoTCards.html/_/brotherhood-without-banners/dreadfort-betrayal/Flaming-Sword-DB which has a completely different function.

To give a better example of how LB/Vigilant would work. Say you have the LB attachment on Robert and in a melee game you are second player. During the first players challenges, they win a Military challenge against you (with a claim of 1). You let it go unopposed so you don't have to kneel anyone for defense. You select Robert for your claim but kneel Lightbringer to save him. Then, on your turn, you are able to win a Power (or any other) challenge against another player. After winning a challenge as an attacker, you may stand all cards with the keyword Vigilant. So, you stand Lightbringer. During the 3rd players turn, they initiate a Military challenge against you. You declare (and kneel) Robert for defense. Due to strength they win the challenge, you can again claim Robert to be killed, and again save him by kneeling Lightbringer. Make more sense?
