Plans for Future expansions???

By IronRavenstorm, in Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition

I know that they just put out a recent expansion for the game, but it got me thinking. What could they possibly add to the game if they came out with another expansion??? Capital ships and tanks are fun, but what can beat that? Sure they would add more races, but I want to know if anyone has any good ideas for new units or anything else to make an expansion worth while.

A Twilight 3 "Fog of War" game as an expansion would be nice.

I tried many online twilight 3 fan versions and they all were fun. happy.gif

In some twilight 3 Fog of War versions, the galaxy rings rotated, or were filled with wormholes or the maps were not circular but some weird shape.

In half the Fog of War games, I never really knew where the other player's homeworlds were but could see in the explored portions of the map, the wars they waged over important planets.

But to make a face to face "Fog of War" twilight 3 game would be hard to do.

Yeah, to make something like that face-to-face would basically require a duplicate copy of the map for each player, and someone to be an arbiter and make sure no one cheats… Somehow I don't see an expansion to TI3 that would include up to 7 duplicate copies of everything released so far. =P

The best they could realistically do is add fleet markers with a common back and numbered faces (potentially for each race) so that players could obfuscate their fleet sizes by keeping the units on some kind of play mat that identified the fleet number they belonged to and then putting the fleet marker on the map. It wouldn't be total Fog of War, but it would be a start anyway.

Other ideas;

Neutral races (something like the FINS that already floating around out there in homebrew-land.)

I wouldn't mind some kind of "global event" deck that makes things explode here and there at random as the game progresses.

NPC race would be nice. Some new races, events just floating around being pain in the a.. for the players :)

More of everything already in existance would be nice. For example more diversity in the Domain Counters, more representatives. More Leaders with you having to choose 3 of them for each game perhaps? And maybe a special tradeship that boosts your trade contracts if you have one in a system of your trade partner? And maybe a special rule that they MAY enter those players space without combat and not blockade? The possibilities are nigh-on endless…

Anything that encourages more aggression in the game would get my vote. Although TI is not a wargame per se, there is rarely any actual benefit to attacking other players. There's really only 2 questions you need to ask yourself about any attack…

A) Does this attack in some way get me Victory Points?

B) Does this attack in some way deny my opponent Victory Points?

The answer is almost always no. That being said, I don't want the game to turn into Axis & Allies, just more incentive for aggression.

Other than that, more races are always welcome, as are new Strategy Cards, Action Cards and Political Cards. Updated race cards with all the units and errata included would be nice, but not a necessity.

How about more racial techs? Rules for neutral races. Rules for allies (and I don't mean the kind of alliances that start with "hey, I'll give you 2 trade goods if…"

I've done something like this for Axis and Allies. We had three sets, one in each room, with a GM updating each map between turns. It added at least three hours to the game, but was fun.

I was thinking about this before. It would be great if they make some special units for each race, to make more diversity between races. It is strange that each race has the same ships. Just one small expansion with lots of new systems, some scenarios and unique ships for each race

I think the intention is that whilst in "reality" the ships of each factions would all be different in form and function to ach other, they are all variations of the same "class" and this is generalized as such in game.

If this were a tabletop game then I'd be with you with the race specific ship designs, but as a boardgame I prefer the broader overview personally.

I can only assume that you've never once played with the Artifacts from SH? They do a tremendous amount to encourage aggression, rewarding it with real points. Play with them and you'll see what I mean.

The SE expansion adds a fair bit to promote the warfare aspect in this game, providing a lot more combat-oriented objectives.
