Model Conversions

By Guest, in Dust Warfare

I have just finished my Corps Officers command squad. I didn't really like how two of them had weird kind of enclosed facemask helmet so I decided to do my first basic little conversion on dust soldiers. I had already did a basic conversion on an AT-43 red blok hussar which simply was to just give it "Lothar" arms that I had left over when I made my "Ludwig". I'm not sure if I can post pics of that as its from another game (although the arms are from Dust ) so I will stick to the Corps Officers. The Unit leader looks like his nose was totally blunted down and was wondering if other peoples' Unit leader for Corps Officers had a similar "shovel face". Mine looks like Voldemort with the nose all flattened out gran_risa.gif

For the others I just swapped some spare 40k heads which ended up being the perfect size and, at least to me, seem to fit in with the models, with the medic having a breather mask for those nasty surgeries and the mechanic having an augmetic eye-piece to help him when he's "fixing stuff". I got the idea for the eye piece from the tank hunters models which have a kind of eye piece on them. Anyways, what do you guys think? Do they suit the models?

Very cool. Fits right in. I was tempted to swap out the heads on my heavy flak guys for some masked heads. I am more inclined to do it now that I see your work. As far as the nose thing I would just call it a war wound, maybe add a scar across his face. gran_risa.gif

I have just nick-named him Capt. Voldemort. But to the men in his platoon, when his back is turned of course, he is simply known as "Old Shovel Face". happy.gif

The heads are just pegged in so you don't need to cut them off, just pull them out with pliers or something.

I'm not usually a big fan of conversions, but that's because folks around here take it so far as to make the original model nigh unrecognizable. preocupado.gif

Yours however are very well done! I rather like them quite a bit. aplauso.gif

Here is the Hussar walker with the Lothar arm on it. The machine gun on it is wrong as well but it is still a work in progress. All I did so far was glue on and paint the Lothar arm and a machine gun and paint over the red blok iconography. I think I may build some "toe" extension pieces to match the axis medium walker and cut down the big protruding thing that I glued the MG onto. I dunno…. it was just such a cool walker model and had a dust feel to it and I had the extra walker pieces leftover, but right now it just doesn't look right, even if the camo pattern was the same. If I do finish the conversion I am on the fence as to whether I want to repaint it to match the subtle grey on grey camo pattern (its there it is just very subtle and hard to see in the pics) I have on the other walkers or paint those walkers to match the camo pattern on the "Lothar" imposter walker…. or should I just ditch it completely? decisions… decisions… And is it just me, or are the heavy laser grenadiers a dead ringer for a Helghast from killzone?

Cool. I like the loaded and unloaded side, along with the 50 cal on a mast type system.

Good stuff. happy.gif

Nice. The headswaps are well executed.

I especially like the one with mohawk and headband.

I purchased a pack of the Secrets of the Third Reich "Soviet Survivor" heads that I plan to mix in to my frontoviki squads for some increased visual variety with a soviet flavor.

I also have a bunch of GW heads from various IG kits that I might experiement with.

I also have some of the Empire free company heads that have some badass facial hair that might look cool on SSU officer figs for a little character.

I also have some of the Wargames factory greatcoat models that I may mix with bits from the SSU figs and various heads to make some kustom officers, etc.

I'll post some pics once I get things rolling, but right now im in the middle of adding extra armor plating and a few extra stowage items to my "Grand'ma" model…

Its funny you should mention wargames factory. I am very seriously considering buying their WW2 American and German soldier 1/56 scale boxes to use as soldier 1 unit types for dust. There are no soldier 1 or soldier 4 models yet, and while soldier 4 are not a huge deal for me, I would love some expendable soldier 1 units in there. There are 30 models in each box and was thinking that squads could go as high as 10 models per squad instead of five. At first I thought it would be too much as you would probably never have that many suppression markers on them to make retreat possible, but on a second look, it is unlikely with only 1 armour save that they would be able to save themselves from dying in droves when you notice that many guns, while so so against armour 2 and 3, throw 10+ dice against armour 1! Plus it would be awesome to roll 20 combat dice from a Nebelwerfer 42 or even a 3 man Heavy Recon Grenadiers squad would bust 24 dice against them! I don't think suppression markers would be a problem for them partido_risa.gif

The models look really nice too and although this game is a "1/48" scale, it would relate to a 1/56 for the wargames factory models. Of course, I am sure that there will be soldier 1 and soldier 4 units in the future, but in the meantime, the wargames factory boxes could be a good unarmoured soldier alternative… and they come on 25mm round bases which I think would work quite nicely! Of course they would be totally unofficial and you would have to make unofficial unit cards for them. Giving them existing weapon types would be easy enough, but pricing them would be tricky as they would allow soo many dice against them and die really fast from, well, everything… but if you field them in squads of 10, would it then make up the difference and make them close to a 5 man squad points wise. They would have to be playtested for sure.

Like it, I have done exactly what you suggest and purchased both the WG GIs and the Bolt Action equivalents to give me pretty much a Type 1 infantry full Platoon with support elements, they are awesome, definitely smaller than the Dust minis but I am treating them as super soldiers anyway, so it does not pose a problem for me, I have mocked up some stat cards for these but am not sure how to post them up here :( Good luck!
