Your Favorite Imperial Regiment

Perhaps options for prefered enemy - such as orks or tyranids - and maybe rare equipment employed by the regiment?

Preferred enemy might be a great option for an older regiment, while a new one… maybe less chance (Though a regiment founded from a world that sees frequent Xenos Attacks or Rebellions could change things)

Such as Valhallan regiments automatically reciving prefered enemy against Orks?

I also hope there are special rules relating to the background of the regiments, such as Mordians getting some sort of mechanized infantry bonus (cheaper/more experienced Chimeras?) and maybe some extra bonuses against Chaos, Valhallans some bonuses against Orks and winter warfare, Vostroyans urban combat and winter combat bonuses, Tallarn desert combat and armour and/or light infantry bonuses, etc. Perhaps if there is a build-it-yourself regiment, when you choose the regimental background and whatnot, you end up getting bonuses dedicated to the background of the regiment/regimental homeworld. This would be fun, especially seeing someone re-creating the Plovian 14th (sp?) (which according to fluff is composed reminants of Elysian and Catachan regiments which specialize in airborne jungle warfare).

The Terrax Guard

followed by the Steel Legions of Armageddon.

First up, are the Tanith First and Only. Awesome scouts, great snipers.

Second, I like the Valhallans. If ever the Space Wolves need back up from the Guard, I'm sure that the Valhallans are the only ones that will feel at home amongst the Wolves.

And third, I'm not sure they qualify as a regiment, but I'd toss out Schaeffer's Last Chancers; the Dirty Dozen of the grimdark future.

Savlar Chem Dogs, scum of the universe that will fight for whatever they can steal, even if it means hacking gold teeth out of someone's face with a bayonet and kept motivated in some sort of vague direction towards the enemy with a steady supply of combat drugs. Plus they're a politically incorrect, funny anacronism from the past you just couldn't sell in a PG13 games store anymore :D

I also really like the Elysian drop troops, having known a few para's in the past, they're all fairly much unhinged at some level.

I like the Catachan because of the vietnam/ desperation feel about them. fighting in a dense and dangerous jungle against unseen foes.

But may be I like the old deathworld rules even better: No Commissars: What do you mean the commissar killed our sarge because we are retreating? Nobody touches our sarge. Raagh

Elysian Drop Troops.

I absolutely love their combat doctrine. Valkyries are completely cool, the Tauros is my favorite vehicle in 40k, their Setinels look rad, I'm not a fan of heavy tanks… And their aesthetic is nice, too. Old-school sci-fi with those funny lascarbines. I'd love to see Forge World do a sculpt of some Elysian Stormtroopers.

Either Death Korps of Krieg or Elysian Drop Troops.

Valhallans all the way. I like their tenacity and the fluff for them from the old 2nd ed IG Codex.

Catachans.

I just think they have a lot of personality, and the models look really cool.

I like the Tallarns as well, but the models are expensive.

I play 40K, and with the new allies rule, I am considering getting some Catachans so they can act as a speed bump to take some pressure off of my Crimson Fist space marines.

It used to be Mordians for years, chiefly because they were the coolest unit in the old Final Liberation game, but in the past weeks my focus had clearly shifted to the Valhallans . I've always been somewhat interested in WW2, and since the Valhallans are basically 40k's version of "Soviets in Spaaace", this was a huge bonus. In my mind, they've got just the right amount of grimdark for the setting - determined enough to sacrifice countless lives in service to the Emperor, yet not as over the top like, say, Kriegsmen in actively having a death wish. Plus, I also think that the Soviets had some rather fashionable uniforms, and naturally this allows for some carryover to Valhallan IG regiments.

Once I had considered the thought, I was reading up some more on Soviet military doctrines and a few journals/interviews of veterans. One of the latter, the story of the sniper Klavdia Kalugina, eventually inspired me to create a Valhallan sharpshooter: http://dark-heresy.wikispaces.com/Dasha
In further acknowledgement of the Valhallans' real life roots, I gave the character's long las model the name "M91 Mordian-Gaunt", a reference to the Mosin-Nagant M91, the Soviets' most widely-used sniper rifle of WW2.

In addition to Valhallans and Mordians I also like Praetorians for their shiny uniforms and "very British" appearance. Just replace the Zulu with Orks and you're there! Cadians come in at a solid 4th place for me. They're a wee bit modern for the Imperial Guard and probably one of the very, very few regiments I could see equipping its soldiers with all the stuff that the Beta rules hand out to everyone, but as I also like Vietnam movies and Cadians in Valkyries, they are the perfect army for this style (no, Catachans are Rambos, not 'Nam troops imho).

Add one more vote for the Valhallans. The shear grit and determination of these guys and gals is amazing. I also like the fact that they do winter warfare, and the background of how Valhalla came to be the wreck the Winter Guard comes from is very inspiring.

Vostroyan Firstborn for me. Awesome uniforms and great fluff.

Oh yeah, chalk me up for Praetoria. It might be biased since Zulu is my favorite war film of all time, but I just love the whole idea behind them and something about them really clicks for me in terms of the concept "Imperial Guard" and all they stand for. You can't imagine the smile on my face when I saw the words "Front rank, FIRE! Second rank, FIRE!" in the codex.

Also, watch this scene and tell me it's not fitting of this game setting. Such a perfectly fitting line.

Valhallans, Death Korps, and Elysians are all awesome.

But the best is the Tanith 1st and Only. Gaunts Ghosts. Nothing else need be said.

Without a doubt its the Roane Deepers, when they crop up in the Gaunt's Ghosts novels they have always been cool. I especially remember the fact that they are described as not being brillient but that they are dependable and generally skilled and that every other regiment would like them at their back.

I've always liked the praetorian models (sadly unavailable now if I'm correct) and as a result I've been collecting an imperial guard army based on cadian bodies but with either pith helmet heads or those australian hats (the name currently escapes me) with the pith helmet headed troops being painted a navy blue with white or black helmets (white if they are officers or NCOs, black for enlisted) and the australian hatted (slouch hats?) troops being painted a sort of sea/moss green. I've basically moddeled them off the Natal Mounted Police Contingent and the native mounted troops from Zulu Dawn. Some red painted infantry are on their way as are some field artillery (the guns from forge world) based off a picture I found of the orange free state artillery corps. My regiment faces off against my friends dark eldar on a regular basis, we thought about guard vs orks but thought it was a little hackneyed.

I'm another fan of Praetorian and Elysian Drop Troops. Also the Kasrkin, ever since reading "What Cadians were born to do" in Malleus.

not to sound vainglorious, but my favorite regiment is going to be my own Mephidross Deadwalkers. They're a Penal Legion from a World created specifically to raise Penal Legions. the interesting thing about the Deadwalkers is that any legionnare who can survive more than 15 as a Deadwalker is freed, pardoned of crimes, commisioned as an officer and placed in charge of other dead walkers. this leads to the rather interesting fact that the Deadwalkers are completely commanded by former prisoners, leading to a nonstandard, though strangely loyal and effective fighting force

Nice idea for a regiment, but more than 15 what? Minutes? Battles? Campaigns?

For me, my top regiment has to be Drookian Fenguard. Firstly because of the small thumbnail sketch of a guardsman riding a tauntaun-like creature in one of the older Guard codexes (there was a 2 page spread of little sketches of loads of obscure and cool looking regiments), and since then Victoria Lambs Golden Daemon Fenguard conversions and the kilted leg conversion pack she released from them has cemented them as my favourite. If I ever do 40k again (which, with 6th having just come out, I might…) I'd want an army of kilt-wearing, tautaun-riders. :D

Enemy at the gates much? ;)

My favorite regiments are:

Gaunt's Ghosts, because of the characters and the fact that they refuse to die. I also like the whole we're the only thing that's left from all three intakes and how they all bond together. In Armour of Contempt, Ezra describes how they all have different scents and how they all still get along even though in his culture it would never happen.

Elysian Drop Troop, because they, like the Ghosts, take a practical approach to war and it's not just: Two men! One gets a rifle and shoots the rifle! When the man with the rifle dies, the second man picks up the rifle and shoots it!

Tlaloc Stormchasers, because they are my own invention. They are also only storm troopers or storm troopers in training and so they don't have big armies and are very efficient at their work, kind of like weak SM ;)

Preatorians, Death Korps and Valhallans. However if I get back into 40k my next project would be a Feudal World Regiment. I reckon I could mix up Cadians with Empire State troops to create the desired effect, and Rough Riders would have to feature, would love Pistoliers with Laspistols and some armoured with Cadian flak armour. Could be fun, though no doubt greenstuff would abound!

DW

The Royal Volpone "Blue Bloods" Loyal to the Throne, and tough to kill!

and the 1001st Volscian (gotta love the idea of hive ganger regiments)

I'm a fan of the Cadians, Death Korps, Catatachan, and the Elysian Drop troops.
