First attempt at some Zombies and a Hans

By Vepr3, in Dust Warfare

I might have overdone it on the weathering. My son said my walker looks like it has been sitting in a field for years lol but I wanted to make it look like it had seen some serious urban fighting so I figured it would have a lot of paint chips and marks from exploding masonary etc. The only thing I have left to do is add some cement colored pigments to the feet for a crushed concrete dust look.

Forgot to say sorry for the picture quality. Why is it so dang hard to take pictures of miniatures? Also any recommendations are welcome even if they include "set it on fire and start over.." It has been a long time since I have painted anything so my already feeble painting skills are as rusty as an anchor.

It looks good and the pic isn't actually bad at all. It really is hard to take pics of minis, always has been unless you have a nice lightbox setup. You just try to get as much natural light as you can, and use a white or light coloured backdrop and hope for the best. The pic isn't that bad though and the models look quite good. I like the weathering on the Hans… no need to set it on fire, lol. Enemy pounders will take care of that for you gui%C3%B1o.gif

Thanks for the comments. I almost painted a rising sun emblem on it due to all the Kamikazie runs I send my poor Hans on. My son also mentioned that my Hans never survives long enough to get that weathered… I think I need to ground him. happy.gif

Actually, there is only one proper way to dispose of a Hans painted in such a way. Unfortunately, this forum limits the amount of words it would require to detail what you must do, so being the humanitarian I am, I'd be happy to PM you my address and I'll take care of it for you. gran_risa.gif

I think the Hans look excellent! Weathered yes, but not too weathered. :)

If you don't mind could you explain the process you used to get it to this state? I'm planning to have my SSU walkers in a similar state of wear and tear so any advice would be most welcome.

I washed the entire walker with GW devlin mud and then went back over it with PP3 great coat grey with just a touch of Vallejo light grey mixed in using a dry brush for some of the raised areas and flat panels that were a little too dark due to the wash. I then used Vallejo hull red and german camo brown (medium I think but I will have to check when I get home from work) for the chipping effects. I went back over the chip areas with a stippling brush and some great coat grey very very lightly and then went back and did some touch up with the camo brown and hull red in those areas. On the legs I used graphite powder on some of the edges to give the worn metal look. The rust and streaking effects were done with a 50/50 mix of Secret Weapon wash Orange and Dark Sepia (this wash dries shiny so it needs a matt varnish over it). The legs piston portions and unamored parts were done in vallejo gun metal grey with a mix of GW badab black and devlin mud followed by the rust wash I mentioned earlier. Hope this helps.

Just reread this and it sounded better in my head than in print. I think I made it sound as if I'd send you a full discourse on how to destroy it.

What I'm trying to convey is you could send me the model and then you wouldn't have to worry about your son making jokes about it.

i.e., It's gorgeous! I wish mine looked that good. cool.gif

I too am interested in your weathering process. *Ninja'd - you put it up.

I knew what you meant. I was going to post "Ok what is your address… hey wait a second!" but I did not want to be accused of padding my post count. lengua.gif

There is no such thing as "overdone" weathering. It looks great!
