The Long Dark (Solo Player Living Tournament)

By juicebox, in Player community

This tournament is part of the Living Tournament system. You are welcome to read this, play the scenario, and post your results (in that order). Place well enough, and you may just end up with a Living Tournament World Ranking !

Scenario: The Long Dark
Deck Parameters: Open Build*
Number of Players: Solo Player

Tournament Parameters:

1) This is a Living Tournament. You may play and post results at your own pace.
2) *Open Build means you may use any legal LOTR LCG cards at your availability.
3) A valid result in this tournament consists of reporting your results (wins and losses) from 3 back-to-back games (may be spread out over as much time as you like), using the same deck for each of those 3 games. (Please observe the mulligan rule, and all other rules, from the LOTR LCG rulebook and subsequent official FAQ documents.)
4) After you post your results, the results from your 3 games will be calibrated using the RGun formula** to obtain your Weighted Result.
5) Weighted Results will then be ranked against other player’s Weighted Results, and the rankings will be updated over time as new results are posted to the thread.
6) You may play this tournament as many times as you would like (so you can try out different deck builds over time), but you can only hold one spot in the overall tournament rankings at a time (i.e. this gives you a chance to try and best your own result while only occupying one spot in the rankings).
7) Do not cheat. Just don’t. It destroys the fun and integrity of the tournament system. If you realize you have made a mistake at a later date that had serious implications for a result you had posted in the past, please make a new post in this thread drawing attention to that fact – that past result will be invalidated, and of course, you are welcome (and highly encouraged) to try again.

**The RGun formula has been designed to value both Final Score (per game) and overall Win Ratio (from your 3 games, cumulative). The formula is: (Average Score of Games Won) x (Total Games Played/Games Won). For an expanded discussion on how this formula was created, you can read the thread called Measuring Success .

Looks like I have to play some more games to bet muemakan. I already tried different combos to test the new cards and heroes. I replaced Dwalin with Háma, won most of the games but with less good results. My first deck was Loragorn, Frodo and Thédored which also scored fantastic results. I had a deck with Dúnhere, Bifur and Dáin which also won most of the games with mediocre results.

Comments : The first game was average, some nastiness but no Spider or Adder, which is crucial for this deck. Was able to play one copy of Elrond's Counsel four times due to Dwarven Tomb. The second game was absolutely insane. Set up was the Mountains' Roots - explored round 1 with Asfaloth, staging was Abandoned Mine - explored with Torch, no enemy. Round 2 was Fatique + surge into the Mountain's Roots - explored with Asfaloth. Round 3 was Abandoned Mine - explored with Torch, no enemy. Failed the test, encounter was the Mountain's Roots - explored with Asfaloth. FInal round staging was Foul Air - cancelled with A Test of Will. Been able to draw over 20 cards but neither Elrond's Counsel nor the Galadhrim's Greeting, thus the relatively high final threat. Have to shuffle the decks better next time. (ps: Having just finished the last game, was two pt away from finishing in round 4 again, having had to kill the awful Spider on round 3, more enemies this time but unless you're unlucky with the set up, aka Twisting Passage or Zigil Mineshaft to an extent, this is usually quite easy solo).

Finally got a run in on the "new" scenario… and with my shiny "new" dwarf deck to boot!

After a couple weeks of break I retake the tournament, trying the new Glorfindel. It has proved a great hero to me, and pairing him with Asfaloth and Light of Valinor it's just awesome. It has been said before in various threads, but I can confirm it: this quest doesn't deserve its 7 difficulty level. However, it is true that I made a very solid deck with some of the most powerful cards we have at our disposal up to the date.

Anyway, all the games were smooth, not having any troubles with enemies, and running from the locate test as much as I could. The second one was very fast, and Glorfindel+Asfaloth, and Beravor+Protector of Lorien brought me to the end quickly. The third one, I just used Galadhrim's Greetings+Good Meal and Elrond's Counsel with Dwarven Tomb several times so I managed to zero my threat.

Posting Your Results (Optional Information): Horrible results, especially in comparison to those already posted, but I figured I'd post them anyway to get on the leaderboard. I tried a Dwarf deck yet again and I continue to struggle to do well with the dwarves - there just doesn't seem to be enough quest power in a deck loaded with dwarves. I also went with Blibo as I figured his extra card draw would come in handy to deal with the Locate test, but in reality I didn't run into many Locate tests and those I did I fared badly with (flipped over 10+ cards in one before I gave up). I would not use Bilbo again in my deck for this as a Hero with better willpower would be more useful to help with questing and prevent the Lost effect from triggering.

2 Core Sets, all expansions including The Hobbit.
I played more than 10 games with varying results, but the last three games were by far my best series.
Bombur is indeed very nice to have in this scenario.
In the first game I got a perfect setup hand with Gandalf, Sneak, Steward and Bombur. I played the Steward on Ori so that I could play Bombur directly, which meant I didn't have to worry about the 5 threat from the setup location. I got totally lost when revealing the second quest card: I had to discard a Sneak (ouch!) AND deal two damage to every character (even more ouch!). However I still managed to clear the second part of the quest in one go thanks to Gandalf, FIli and Kili showing up in the last minute.
In game two I got three sneaks but no Gandalf…
Game 3 went smooth as the last one partly thanks to a good setup. I also (for once) had some luck with the location tests.

I played this quest with wrong encounter set "Hazards of the Pit" first. Average results were around 80. Then I've changed it for the valid one "Deeps of Moria" and my score is much better now. It could be a stroke of luck but I think that DoM is really easier to play.
