So basically you can use strength (not just gold) to gain your own strongholds?

Yes, either can be used.

Thought as much guess i played it correctly. I do hope so far i've not been playing things too wrong.

A bit odd using strength to get your own strongholds though I suppose one could say one needed a certain 'workforce' to build them OR to secure them.

I like to think of it as sending a garrison to keep the peace in the stronghold. I know the game takes awhile for people to get use to the style, but don't worry you were playing it correctly.
