OW Character Concepts

By The Russian, in Only War

I haven't seen a thread like this yet, so I'll start this one…

I'm wondering what kinds of PCs the community would want to create to play as under the ideal circumstances, as we don't have any rules. I don't even think its feature locked yet… which isn't great for release ETA but may be good for features!

Here are a few ideas for characters I want to play (either off the bat or eventually): Though it may be a little limited so far…

1. 1st Lt. Arnold Pillar. Cadian Shock Troops, Officer. Leader by example, and one mean son-of-a-*****, grizzled veteran. Prefers a carbine length weapon or an hand cannon. Inspired by Captain Ronald Spears from Band of Brothers, specifically the part where he relieves Lt. Dike during the assault on Foy (sp).

2. Pvt. (Haven't thought of a name). Death Korps of Krieg, Guardsman. Rifleman, but not green. Devoted member of the Imperial faith. Zealot. Would rather carry a lasgun or autogun than anything else, unless told otherwise. I don't really have any inspiration here, maybe the violent humor of Hugo Stiglitz from Inglorious Basterds.

3. Sgt. Appleby. Elysians, Sergeant. Grizzled veteran of other conflicts, middle aged and scared. Mean, vulgar, and rude. Prefers his bolt pistol to anything else, follows his officer no matter what. Calm under fire and quick thinking as a product of his service. Inspired by Sgt. Plumbly from We We're Soldiers.

4. Alexiev Essen. Commissar for the Valhallan. Unyielding in duty, but rational and friendly. Educated and philosophical. Maybe that guy who got a little scared in combat doesn't deserve death but a good talking to and some extra KP duty. They guy who refuses to fight or runs outright from combat. He was dead before his weapon hit the ground or the man was out of the trenches. No character inspiration, really.

5. Sgt. (No name yet). Cadian Shock Troops, Sergeant. Loyal, and a believer that the unit is made stronger by brotherhood. He tries to keep up morale of the men, and keep them safe. a protective friendly Sergeant. Inspired by Lt. Carwood Lipton from Band of Brothers.

A name isn't actually necessary here - many Krieg soldiers are identified only by a number or other impersonal designation. It helps emphasise the pervasive idea that a soldier of Krieg exists only to give his life in the Emperor's name.

Well know I know.

And know is half the Battle.

Which may or may not be heresy. -> Gets shot by Commissar anyway.

But have about Private Zero-One-Three-Six -… Insert rest of serial number…

You realy could have roll up any charater from crocidile dundee to davey crockett to the guy who is scared so bad that he can't move and just shoots and shoots and shoots, and then is called a hero. the little that i do know is the imperium is vast so you could have recreate any and every body in all war movies, the options are limited by your imagination.

True, but what would a player want to play? Inspired or not.

I kinda want to play a dashing cavalry officer in a fashionable regiment.

I wouldnt mind playing a comissar, but barring that a pilot or a tank commander

I want to play a mouthy scoundrel of a guard who gets routinely punished for his attitude but gets the job done no matter the odds.

Meh. Wouldn't that be the Penal Legion's gig ?

touche. well maybe not quite the dirty dozen but something close

A flame trooper, one who knows his way around fire, who always has a Lho-stick in his mouth.

Inspired by Brostin of Gaunts Ghosts

Probably a Commisssar, attached to a Tallarn mechanized infantry regiment. Failing that, either to a Drop Troop regiment (specifically the Harakoni), or an armored regiment (Mordians, Tallarn, or Cadians).

I want to play Hunter S. Thompson as an officer/commissar. Exploits could possibly include starting trouble at a fancy officer's ball, with a little help from his right hand man and confidant, Sergeant Oscar. Preferably while on obscura or Emprah knows what.

we can't stop here, this is gargoyle country. ^_^

I kinda like the idea of the stressed out, shell shocked, junkie medic ala "Hamburger Hill"

If I ever get to play this game as my gaming group relies on me to run the 40K rpg's, I will play Valentina Orlov, Commissar and ice princess. She will be stern and inspiring and always handy with a drink. She is intersted ins aving mens lives but will surely execute anyone for cowardice or disobeying her view of the orders. :)

As fun as it would be to play as a comissar. and as much as i would love to play one. i personaly think it sould be left to the GM to run a NPC comissar, that way no one player could abuse the power of the commisant. Or if not that at least limit it to one per group.

I guess it depends on the maturity of your group really and how they get along. Otherwise, no one should play the squad leader in Deathwatch, the Inquisitor in Dark Heresy, or the Rogue Trader in Rogue Trader by that line of thinking, but you are probbaly right it shoudl be down to one in a group unless the game concept involves multiple Commissars and you are in some sort of special Commisarial detachment in the unit.

I would want to be the bad ass, "cool guys don't look at explosions", neck snapping, demolition man who runs around slinging both a hot-shot lasgun and a plasma pistol at the same time. Somewhere during each mission, my character finds a new woman in distress who I rescued and eventually get into some life-or-death stunt situation. Almost like Bruce Willis in the first Die Hard, before he was jumping on plains. I want to be repelling down tall buildings, shooting in windows, while pushing C4 down an elevator shaft.

So I guess I would be a Storm Trooper at some point.

Staff Sgt. Rad Heroman - Catachan born! cool.gif

A Storm Trooper who has a rare belief in a benevolent God-Emperor. He'll have plenty of bionics.

An Enginseer with a demented love of fast vehicles.
