Some new player questions

By magichacker, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hello all, only played once but loving the game.

Few questions that I'm unsure of.

During all the challenges if they go unopposed what exactly happens.

Power Challenge - Get to claim power from opponent and also get 1 power for hitting direct?

Intrigue Challenge - Get to have him discard amount of claim and also get 1 power for hitting direct?

Military Challenge - Can you still have him kill one card if he does not block to satisfy the claim and get 1 power for hitting direct?

With a claim of 1 would this equal to getting 4 power this turn on all challenges?

I am correct that he would have to have a military card to block a military challenge correct?

Is the reason for Infamy so that someone cannot take your power from your house during a challenge and can you move them back and forth or would it be stuck on Jamie Lanister for example and if he dies I loose all power.

And last just so I'm sure we also had the Plot card that kills everything in play come up, you can kneel Ghost to save Jon Snow for example correct and the Kennel Master can be put back in your hand if the conditions are correct and any duplicates in play can be discarded to save that card. In other words you can negate the everything dies card if you can.

Sorry for all these I'm just really, really wanting to get people involved in this and had 4 last night who loved it but we were confused on some rules, etc

Thanks

Correct. If your opponent cannot block any of your three challenges, and your claim is 1, you will end up with 4 power (3 power from winning unopposed, one power from his House card), 1 dead character, and one card discarded from his hand (assuming he has the characters, power, and cards to lose).

Card effects can increase any of these results, too (renown, multiple challenges of a particular type, high claim, etc.).

And, yes, unless a card effect says otherwise, he must have the appropriate icon type to defend a challenge.

There are a few card effects that allow you to move power from one place to another, but Infamy itself does not. It simply allows you to place claimed power (or power some effect allows you to 'move' to your House card (see, for instance, Claw Isle (EB))) on a card with the Infamy keyword instead. Absent some other card effect, it stays on that card. If the card is killed or otherwise removed from play (discarded, returned to your hand, etc.), you lose the power on that card.

One reason to do this is, indeed, to put it somewhere your opponent can't take it from you as claim in a power challenge. Some card effects also make use of power on characters, so you can build a deck to capitalize on it.

You have an opportunity to Save/Cancel before the kill effect resolves (IOW, before it "hits" any characters). So yes, in general terms, if Valar is played, you can use any saves you have (card effects, discarding duplicates, and so on) to prevent characters dying. You do have to fulfill the terms of any save that has one (i.e., Kennel Master going back in your hand).

Note that you can't do this if the plot card is Wildfire Assault or any other effect that says "(cannot be saved)."

Don't let it get to you that the rules confuse you. I've been playing almost a year and still find things I don't quite get on an all-too-regular basis. The interactions between cards can get very complicated (as even the FAQ acknowledges). And a lot of combinations of effects seem to provide multiple, perfectly reasonable interpretations, requiring us to get rulings (and FFG to issue FAQ updates) with pretty much every new cycle of cards. It can be frustrating but the complexity is part of what makes the game so fascinating.
