Lords and Puppies

In short, could someone explain this archtype to me? I've been wondering about it a lot but I can't seem to find any concrete support for why this is a thing, there doesn't seem to be any card support for nobel/direwolf synergy. How does it work? What makes it different from a more tool box SoW?

Hmm…

Off the top of my head, I think the primary basis for such a deck is:

  • Guardian Wolf ties the two themes together
  • There's some synergy from the unique direwolves from the Core Set (and Summer from Lords of Winter)
  • The real basis of a 'direwolf' deck are the the attachment versions of Shaggydog and Grey Wind (denial of opponents challenges through strength reduction and killing off their attackers)
  • A duplicated noble-character provides an excellent platform for holding those direwolves, since it can be hard to remove (especially with Power of Blood) and can easily be obtained via Widow's Watch/Jeyne for Robb
  • Additionally the nobles provide the deck with further closing potential

The whole deck will almost naturally develop quite a strong search basis (Jeyne, Wolf Dreams, To Be a Wolf, Kennels, maybe even Rickon) that can be further emphasized. This will make it quite easy to get all of the required parts together, and can shut down most of your opponents challenges unless they have suitable toolbox cards for disrupting it. The added search also allows the deck to be quite 'robust' for a deck based on card combinations.

Of course, I would argue that with Maesters and Targ being as strong and common as they are, attachments aren't really something you should be basing your deck too much on in competitive play…
