I've done it!

By fhaugh, in Dust Tactics General Discussion

I have created a way to safely hold any based figure securely to my safety trays. I've been using them for a couple of years, but since I normally don't do any basing details I've been using the simpler cheaper method I originally designed. I was talking to a local game store owner about selling the boxes and trays through the store, and the owner suggested I needed a way to hold figures without rubbing the basing off. If I could do that he thought more people would be interested.

So I'm showing it off here to see what you all think. I use it for Dust figures, but the trays can be designed for nearly any figure with a base. I even had a tank model mounted to one tray. I have literally dropped one of the boxes off the table onto concrete and none of the figures were damaged. I don't have to dig through 4 layers of foam to find the figure I want, and I don't have to fool around with magnets messing with my electronics. All figures with the same base size can use each others slots, so reorganizing is simple. A tray doesn't even need to be all the same size. I have one tray with 20 infantry and 2 walkers sharing a tray.

I would love to here your comments… SANY00019.jpg SANY00562.jpg

Are you using magnets?

Nope. No magnets to mess with your electronics. They're too expensive for the ones that are strong enough to be secure. Plus it would be a pain to either make the trays out of metal or put metal inserts into each spot. Besides, my system only adds 1/16 of an inch. Any rare earth magnet that thin isn't going to survive long without cracking.

This method can actually be used with my existing system. You could have a tray with 5 spots for based figures and the rest held in by the top of the base. Since I normally only paint my bases this was necessary to me.

Plus, I think the magnet and metal tray systems get too heavy and expensive.

I was not thinking metal trays but rather magnetic sheeting which is relatively cheap with metal washers on the bases. I have made something similar before but never found a suitable case like a suitcase but with hard sides. Anyway good luck with your idea.

Magnetic sheeting? Never heard of it…

If you could make the trays 8 1/2 X 11 they would fit into my boxes…

Yeah I work in the tradeshow industry and its typically used for magnetic signs you see on cars. Any sign shop could turn you on to it or get it online. Anyway enjoy your creation.
