Help with first game.

By Skyjack, in Dust Warfare

I have the Tactics Revised Core set. I have downloaded the Warfare PDF.

I have also downloaded an excel army builder sheet.

I want to play a game this weekend with my son.

I don't see a way to make a platoon using all the models in the set we have.

Did they really make it so you can't play a starter game with the starter set? Or am I messing up how to build our platoons?

The Revised core is designed as a starter set for Dust Tactics so it is not intended to be a starter set for Dust Warfare. I am not sure what models are in it or if you can build a list using them. I assume you can though. Most of the people I know buy the book build their list then buy the models.

Main problem is no stores around me carry the models on hand. Order only except for the Revised Core Set. So if we want to play looks like we must wait even longer. This seems odd because other war games you can play with their starters. I realize its a Tactics starter. Sounds like they need starters for Warfare.

you should be able to build a schwer platoon with laura as the unit leader. I haven't taken a look at the allies equivalent, but I assume that its lead by either a hell boys squad or rhino. The units to make a platoon should be in the box, and if I got it right you should be able to use all our figures.

Ohh yeah and you have sturmpioneers so you can get a blutzkruez squad too.

Also, I would like to add that I don't have the book in front of me so I could be wrong.

The Revised Core Set CAN make 2 legal platoons. Just remember, you HAVE to take something from 1st Section, you can skip around, pick and choose, from Sections 2-4.

Axis:

Blutkreuz Platoon

Command: Sturmpioniere Squad 25AP

1st Section: Heavy Laser Grenadiers

2nd Section: Heavy Flak Grenadiers

Support: Hans Light Walker

Hero: Lara (attach to HFG for a REALLY powerful anti-infantry punch that has the ability to ignore cover)

Allies:

Assault Platoon

Command: Hellboys 25 point

1st Section: Heavy Ranger Assault Squad (Hammerers)

4th Section: Ranger Weapon Squad

Support: Blackhawk Light Walker

Hero: Rhino (attach to HRAS for some hand to hand brutality)

Craig always to the rescue with his copy of the book. I should start bringing mine to work with me as well since that's the only time I am on these **** forums.

Same here

Merely the mark of a true procrastinator. I'm at lunch, and SHOULD be writing for a Sunday deadline . . . which of cousre means I'm eagerly following every new topic on this forum with my rulebook nearby . . . just in case . . .

I mean hey, what's another allnighter before a deadline, right? My wife's getting used to them, and I'm starting to feel like I'm back in college! Not the good parts, unfortunately . . . gran_risa.gif

Ok so we can make a platoon each. Awesome. Each platoon has 4 units which means we will be playing without 1 unit each of what is included with the RCS. I can certainly live with that. That should let us stage a starter game to get the rules down and help us figure out what models to order next. My son is 10 years old and loves Uncharted Seas. We tried Tactics while waiting to get Warfare book ( didn't know it had a download for a while). He liked Tactics. Anyway I went to lunch came back and had responses to thanks for the fast replies and the great help.

Hey, hey! Uncharted Seas! Tha'ts what I'm supposed to be working on! But instead, I was over here, helping out! gran_risa.gif

You can actually use everything in the Revised Core in a fully legal platoon, Each platoon has 1 command section (mandatory), and then 1-4 regular sections (only sec 1 is mandatory), and then 1 Support unit for each 2 full sections (including command), so there's your light walker (with a legal slot of another support unit), and each 150 or part thereof lets you take a hero, so there's your Lara and/or Rhino.

They're not exactly well-matched, as the Axis list, out of the box, is 140 points while the Allies list is 120, but if you purchase the Platoon Upgrade Preparatory Bombardment for them (which is completely legal and requires no additional models), you'd be at 140 each.

Now, keep in mind, I'm not saying whether or not Preparatory Bombardment is any good . . . I have no idea, as I've never seen it used . . . but it DOES cost 20 AP happy.gif

You'll see the lists are interestingly kitted out, with the Allies having fewer, more elite models with 1 good anti-armor, 1 good anti-troop, and their HQ is decent at anti-troop, a walker that's a mixed bag of tricks (most useful with a radio-operator, which does not come in the RCS), and a hero that is mainly anti-troop. While the allies have a close-ranged anti-troop HQ, a mixed bag light infantry squad, and a close assault squad with jump packs that has the potential to wreck anything in the game, and a predominantly anti-armour walker, and a hero that joins the close assault squad and, again, can wreck anything in the game if he gets close enough.

So, right out of the box you should have a fully legal and fairly interesting game that will let you see some of the toys of each faction.

Have fun!

Thanks Craig!. BTW fan of your show. Also BTW my family is the one Russ played Mouseguard with via Kinect.

Ah, awesome! Thanks for the kind words! Russ still talks about how much fun he had!

Hope you enjoy Dust:Warfare. As you know from the show, we love it, still love it (or I wouldn't have the rulebook with me every lunch), and think it's a great, simple, easy to learn/hard to master war game!

Good luck!

I think you meant to say, "Axis" rather than, "Allies" in the first sentence didn't you?

Why yes, yes I did.
