saving 2 times

Are you able to save a char if the first time you try to save it gets canceled? or does attempting to save put you past step 2 and then when your save gets canceled are you past the point where you can respond

That would depend on how you were trying to save that character. Let's say you have a character with a dupe on it and an Iron Mines in play. Let's also say you lost a military challenge and have to kill 1 character for claim. You can kneel and discard the Iron Mines from play to save your character. However, your opponent plays He Calls it Thinking to cancel the effect (note your Iron Mines is still discarded as the cost of the effect, regardless of the cancel). Then you can remove a duplicate to save the character. If your opponent really wants you dead, let's say they play another HCiT to cancel that effect. Your duplicate is still discarded (again as part of the cost) and the character is not saved.

However, if you have an ability that says "pay 1 gold to save this character", and you pay the 1 gold, and someone plays the HCiT to cancel it, then you are still out that gold AND you cannot trigger that ability again to save the character.

Basically, it comes down to:
You can play as many different saves as you like, if previous ones are cancelled.

The other thing to keep in mind is that you do not "get beyond" Step 2 until all players have passed consecutively. So there is no trick of wanting to play a second save (for either the same character or another character killed at the same time), but being too late to do so.

Save/cancel responses still follow the same basic response rule of "as many as you want, but only once per card triggered". (Don't get that confised and think it is only once per card affected.)

By the way, you couldn't trigger The Iron Cliffs' save twice for the same character, right?

Your right, the one response per trigger would prohibit it. Iron cliffs WAS triggered in response to the save window created, it got cancelled and thats all she wrote.

Although, keep in mind that in a Valar oe claim-2 situation, Iron Cliffs could be triggered once for each character. So while you cannot save 1 character 2 times from the same effect, you could save 2 characters 1 time each from the same effect.

Is that because, even though the cause of the two characters' deaths is a single occurrence (Valar or 2-claim), each individual character's death is a separate trigger?
