Dust Chronicles (dust fanzine), Issue #1 deadline fast approaching

By theguildllc, in Dust Warfare

Some of the community members and I are taking the first steps towards doing an online Dust Tactics and Warfare Fan'zine. We would like to make it 'for you by you', and to do that we need your submissions. We are looking for 'battle reports' for both games, fan fiction, hobby/paint articles, write ups on your clubs/LGS/events, and anything else YOU would like to see in an online magazine dedicated to the hobby and world of Dust. Please send submissions to [email protected], please include 'submision' in the subject bar. Thanks.

I love this idea! I will post what I can when I can to you guys!

happy to lend my experience. Ive emailed ahead requesting concepts for articles.

Glad you guys like the idea. send in any ideas and material you'd like to have considered for inclusion. I'm sure there are tons of things you guys can think of that we havnt. Looking forward to the submitals.

Great idea. I will try to do an article, battle report or paint tutorial this weekend if I get the chance. Actually maybe what I will do is do is go over my terrain and gaming table with pics… something that I think would be a cool little recurring section, showing off peoples' setups. There are some really cool ones out there and I find looking at peoples' gaming tables is one of the most inspiring things.

I took the easy and lazy way out with my setup. A citadel realm of battle table with a grassy forest theme with rivers and ruined buildings from battlefield in a box…. yup, I took the easy way out happy.gif but it still looks good. A couple of the custom war torn city settings that I have seen on this site are awe-inspiring and I think a section every issue showing them off would be great. Do you have a name for this fanzine yet? A clever little name goes a long way….

You may already have a name, but the last post got my brain going.

"Ashes to Ashes"

"VK Today/Bulletin/Gazette"

"Force Collision"

Any particular format you'd like stuff in? TXT file with clearly named photos?

@Srombole we're going to have a 'spotlight' section thats going to feature hobbiests and their collections, interviews, clubs and their events, LGS etc. What we'd prefer is if you did a Terrain Tutorial, that would be great, even something simple. And the we'd include pics of your finnished table to show what could be done. But what we REALY need are Battle reports.

@crayolasmoker there's a poll on the Official Dust Facebook page. We narrowed it down to a few as we need to have a working title by Monday. Please gather you friends to vote.

Love the idea and I will contribute what I can!

I am already on board as well. Can't wait to see what we can get going.

I can contribute too but do you have a specific format in mind for batreps?

I recently completed a battle and sorta reported it. Link to my blog

Not sure how detailed you want it to be.

@enrgie we dont have a format yet. we want to get a stokpile of em going and publishineg the 'best' thatll give people an idea of how to format their reps.

In regards to the Fanzine: Issue #1's theme will be 'Zverograd'. We are looking for Dust Tactics and Warfare 'Battle Reports'. For this issue please only submit reports for games from the Tactics Campaign expansion Operation:Zverograd with the SSU faction represented. For Warfare, just make sure you submit games played on an urban table that could be Zverograd. We are also looking for any SSU step-by-step painting and urban baseing articles as well as 'modeling ruins'. Submissions for issue #1 are due June 30th, please send to [email protected].
If your submissions dont match these needs or are something not addressed above, dont worry! Submit anyway, maybe we didnt realize we needed to include it yet or maybe it will go into a future issue. (gameplay trick and tips, fan fiction, etc.) and we are always on the look out for pics of cool tables, miniature collections, people hanging out and playing etc. Thanks everyone!

I can make a ruined Zverograd building article. It can be a long submission if you want a lot of pictures.

Well that sucks sad.gif . Took a bunch of pics of a game and have been spending a bunch of time putting together a flashy looking battle report for it and find out you are only looking for Zverograd/SSU/urban battlefield stuff. I was not planning on buying any SSU stuff until they actually had a complete army to buy and a campaign book to go with it. My gaming table is a little more on the rural side too. I do have ruined buildings but it is a grassed table with rocky hills, forests and rivers… not exactly what you were looking for. Oh well… if you do another issue maybe that will have something to do with the stuff I have.

@alien, yes please do! If it's too long we can always edit it down. Too much is workable, too little is difficult. The first issue is going to be Zverograd themed so please send it in by the 30th of June.

@strombole. SEND IT IN ANYWAY!!! What might not work for this issue might be PERFECT for future issues!

For those sending us pics; please pose your miniatures on and in front of Dust Tactics tiles or on a warfare terrain table.

Paolo Parente has agreed to answer a few questions (interview) for us in Issue#1. Here's your chance to ask him whatever you want about Dust. send em to [email protected] or post them here.

Due to time constraints, questions are due by 12 noon Friday Pacific Standard Daylight Time (California USA).

I wish I could send you my last game for a battle report because it was truly epic but I didn't record any of it :-(

Just wondering if you have been getting any zverograd battle reports? If so, how are people getting their SSU stats for warfare already? This is kind of why I assumed the Zverograd/SSU issue would come after the SSU stuff was released as there is very little SSU stuff released for Tactics and nothing for warfare. I guess you guys have probably been getting some stuff but would it not make more sense to start the first issue with Axis and Allies? They are what everyone has in their collections and have been playing with all this time. I'm sure there are people with SSU models already, but that is only 2 or 3 squads and one chopper so far and no warfare rules unless I'm missing something and everyone has SSU warfare units and rules but me…. Is every one sitting with a collection of SSU choppers and the campaign book at home but me and laughing at me right now?

I couldn't agree more. I think it makes far more sense to do a SSU/Zverograd issue just after the Op. Zverograd Campaign book hits the shelves. I get the need to strike while the iron is hot, but at this point I think a Zverograd issue for DT makes sense, one for DW does not. Speculating on stats while a fun exercise will make a publication seem like the National Enquirer. Waiting for the cold hard facts and writing it right after they arrive will be more like the NY Times or the Washington Post. gui%C3%B1o.gif

The first issue wont be out till August, so who knows what we'll have by then? We'll not be doing SSU proxy or speculating on stats Warfare report. Axis and Allies are also involved in the struggle for Zverograd. The theme will remain Zverograd for issue #1 though we do hear you.

I understand the whole August thing but submissions are due June 30 and even the best estimates don't have Zverograd being released until a week before that which means even with everything pre-ordered ahead of time, I would have to pay extra to have it shipped to me in a few days instead of the normal shipping which takes 8 or 9 days usually from my online retailer. This, of course, would involve using UPS which, as a Canadian, guarantees hefty charges for customs and a big fat brokerage fee which are usually just as high as what I payed for the products in the first place. Even if I did this and payed twice as much for this stuff as I should, I would then have to charge out and try to play a bunch of games with them over a couple days to get enough of a view on how they actually play on the table then bash out something quick to send to you for June 30. Plus, then it would just be pics of unpainted or semi-painted models which I would not do. Its just not going to happen.

And that is okay…. I'm sure you will have plenty of people that submit things to you. I just was excited about this when you announced it and wanted to contribute. I know you said to submit articles and pics anyway for future issues but it is a hard sell. To put in a bunch of work to properly write an article is not like bashing out a forum reply. When I write on a forum I am just bashing away at the keyboard with no regard for syntax, spelling, or much of anything for that matter. If I were to write an article I would take the time and summon up the long unused skills that I learned while obtaining my honours degree in History (Go Mustangs!). Then, after writing such an article, you have to wonder if it will see the light of day sometime in September or if it ever sees the light of day at all.

In the end, it is your baby. I was just excited to contribute and that excitement completely died when I found out I couldn't contribute in any meaningful way. It might come back in August when the first issue is released and I read it, but by then the submissions for the second issue would probably have passed. Of course, by then, I will have all this SSU stuff in my hands and will be doing all this Zverograd stuff and so anything I would contribute would probably be SSU/Zverograd related. Then it would be pointless as the entire issue that just came out already discussed everything that I would want to discuss. Oh well… I will likely just start up a fansite and just put all my thoughts, pics, videos, and battle reports there and when Zverograd comes out, I will talk about it after everyone has experience with it. Right now, the only conversations seem to be "Grand'ma is cool" and "When you scratch the paint off the molotov cocktail it is not clear underneath". Just my two cents anyway. I could very well be in the minority here and can accept that and I really do wish the fanzine does well and wish you luck and will look forward to reading it, but I will do my own thing and try not to step on your toes while I am doing it. People will always be free to submit as many things to the fanzine and to my site as they want as it is all about the love of the game anyway. I will link my site in my sig in the next couple of days for anyone who is interested. Good luck.

Paolo Parente has agreed to answer a few questions (interview) for us in Issue#1. Here's your chance to ask him whatever you want about Dust. send em to [email protected] or post them here.

Questions for Paolo Parente:

1. There's been speculation about what the future of Dust might include based on previous works (like the Japanese walkers from the Dust Sourcebook, and the Vril Hecaton). Are those previous works going to be part of the Dust canon, or should we expected changes and evolutions to the Dust universe?

2. Since a lot of the traditional factions from the World War II era have been combined to form the Allies, Axis, and SSU, how much room is there for new factions to expand the range of the game?

3. The game stats for the Dust Warfare / Tactics minis have some unfilled holes (like Infantry 1 and 4, and vehicles 1, 2, 5, and 6). Do you see all those spots being filled with models at some point in the development of the game?

4. Are there any future plans for AT-43? Is there any chance that game would ever make a comeback in any form?

Thanks!
