Yesterday i was playing mt lanister deck against a STARK [siege].
during marshalling my opponent plays THE WALL location and and when i attacked
he put in play from his hand as a def a big NW character[ DEFOTNORTH] i think.
my question is >>the nw character is legally put in defence with no icons gained through agendas or other card effect?

Yep. Effects that allow characters to be inserted into challenges do not require that character to have the corresponding icons. That's also why several of the characters that have such effects also have the challenges that they can be used in defined in their card text (have a look at KoW Catelyn or CS Greatjon for example). In a similar vein the newer Greatjon can be used to defend intrigue, Burned Men bounced into intrigue challenges via Hidden Vale Pass, Walder Frey participate in challenges at all… etc.
