Responses and Multiple Triggers.

By DerBarchen, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Ok, this already exists as a topic somewhere but the search feature is Terribly unusable so Ill just ask again. I win a military challange with King Roberts Host, can I play price of war and die by the sword (and maybe even no quarter) all for winning the same challange and why can I/cant I?

Yes. The Response window stays open until all players consecutively pass. So, you can play any responses you meet the conditions for, even if everyone else passes, until you're done and pass yourself.

Sounds to me like you having some trouble reconciling two different concepts from the FAQ. First, on pg. 15, we have:

Response "Opportunities"
When the requirements (or "play restrictions") for playing a response are met, the response is said to have an "opportunity." …
You can think of opportunities as "gates" that open up, allowing you to play specific responses during an action window. … These opportunities (or "gates") stay open until Step 6, when the action finally ends and the action window closes.

(emphasis added).

The fact that the Response opportunities stay open until Step 6 means that after you play your first "after you win a military challenge" response, the "after you win a military challenge" opportunity is still open and available for you to play more responses. So this entry says that you can play as many "after you win a military challenge" responses as you have and can pay for.

But then, on pg. 7, we have:

(2.4) Responses Per Trigger
If a response or passive ability is triggered, the effect can only occur once per trigger. For example, if Sansa Stark (CORE S9) is in play and you play an attachment on her, Sansa Stark's effect (draw a card) can only be triggered once. (If a second attachment is played on Sansa Stark, her ability can be triggered again.)

So this entry seems to be saying that you can only trigger a response once for the "after you win a military challenge" opportunity.

But the thing to recognize is that the bit on pg.7 does not say you can only trigger one response. It says that you can only trigger each response 1 time. That's a big difference. Switch the Sansa example in the FAQ to (Core Set) Robb Stark instead. His response says that after you win a military challenge, he can kill 1 character controlled by the losing player. The "Response Per Trigger" entry says that you can only trigger him one time rather than systematically killing all of your opponent's characters by triggering him over and over until they are all dead. That does not mean, however, that you cannot trigger Robb, then (since the "after you win a military challenge" opportunity is still open), trigger Die By The Sword, then (since it is still open) trigger The Price of War, and so on.

So, those two rules together say that while you can trigger as many different responses as you have and can pay for, you can only use each individual card with a "Response" effect once per response opportunity.

Hope that all makes sense.

Thanks Ktom that was excactly the problem, that and that the question came up at 3am and I couldn't really come up with a satisfactory answer. Gotta keep this in mind next time someone starts throwing around "one response per trigger" when their board gets wiped >.>
