Question about Reactions

By Classico2, in Dust Warfare

Hi there!

This being by first post i wanted to introduce myself first. My name is Michael, I'm from Germany and I am a big fan of all boardgames ;)

We just finished our first round of DW and i have a question about reactions. I really hope that this question hasn't been asked before, but i searched the forum and couldn't find anything.

Is a unit allowed to perform a reaction to an enemy unit, even after it has been activated during the unit phase and has already performed two actions? We couldn't find anythting in the rulebook that would forbid this kind of thing, but it felt weird to us, since this would a unit three actions.

Let me give you an example: A Luther has not recived an order during the command phase and is activated in the unit phase. He moves and fires. The Player than activates all his other units until his turn is over. The opposing player then attacks the Luther with his Tank Busters-Unit. Because the attacking unit is withing 12" of the Luther, it would normally be allowed to shoot at the Tank-Busters. But may he do that? He has already used both his actions!

I seems really strange to me, if the Luther in the above example would be allowed to react after already having been activated properly, because it would mean that it would be much smarter to not give orders to your units in the command phase (since they would get a reaction marker this way and would not be allowed to react to an attack made on them), but to only activate units during the command phase and to use reactions only after the units have made all their actions, since that effectively gives them three actions.

Ok, so I hope i have made my problems clear to everyone and that there are people out there who can give me a conclusive answer. Apart from this question, my buddy and I really enjoyed the game!

Thanks for the help in advance.

The Answer is yes the unit can react even if it used actions in the activation phase. This has been discussed several times on this forum actually and I believe is even addressed in the FAQ (could be mistaken though)

yes indeed it has been covered, but folks have often questioned the logic, so no harm in asking here just to be on the safe side.

Happy gaming

Yes, you can in fact have 3 actions if you don't issue said unit a command in the command phase, you utilize 2 actions in your unit phase, and you don't suffer suppression prior to a Reaction Triggering event in your opponents unit phase.

Timing of what you do when is critical to success in this game. While you can gain an additional action by not using commands, keep in mind it is sometimes better to give up a, "possible" extra action to deny your opponent one on their turn. In your example, had the Panzer Walker fired at and suppressed or destroyed the Tank Busters in your command phase, then they would have been less likely to get an attack of against your Walker in their unit phase.

Thanks for the quick answers, everyone!

It seems like a really big advantage to have three actions, though in think i can see what Shadow4ce is saying.

Yeah, in my games I haven't found there to be a huge amount of reactions. Perhaps it's just the way we play, but we often have units out of the 12" range giving suppression fire so that the more powerful close-range units can jump in close and do damage without a reaction occurring. So while it can happen occasionally, it's not something where all your units get 3 actions - maybe 1 or 2 will, and that's just the advantage of having initiative.
