Just got the starter set!

By Yog, in CoC General Discussion

I just bought the starter set at a local game store!! What was funny was the guy at the store didn't know they had it. I guess not many people play around here, shame… So where do I go from here? What expansion, if any are most worth it?

Secrets of Arkham is usually the recommended second buy, it adds quite a bit to a single copy of the Core set. After that, either another Core set (or two) if you feel like you want more consistency in your decks, or the Yuggoth Contract cycle of Asylum Packs, as that seems to have the highest concentration of solid cards across all the factions.

Thanks for the response! I will definitely look into those sets. :)

After thinking about it and looking at the cards, I have decided I want to make a deep one deck. I've always been a fan of the shadow over Innsmouth. It would be cool to make a decked themed around that! What cards/sets would you recommend for such a deck? Would it be tournament competitive? Thanks.

The Summons of the Deep cycle was heavily Deep One themed, and Secrets of Arkham has a few key cards. And Khopesh of the Abyss, which has pretty much become a staple in any Cthulhu aligned deck, can be found in The Shifting Sands Asylum Pack. Shifting Sands also has 12 new story cards, which are what should be used for tournament play, and (imho) are far better than either of the 10 card story decks from the Core or SoA, making Shifting Sands one of the best APs available.

CardGameDB is a great online resource for Call of Cthulhu, and is the perfect tool to plan out your purchases. It lists all the cards and which Asylum Packs/Boxed Sets they come in, making it a lot easier to slap together a themed deck.

To start out your "Shadows Over Innsmouth" deck, just do a search for the "Deep One" trait and expand from there. Here's the link:
