Gates and Other World Encounters

By LARPkitten, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

My friends and I are unable to get a conclusive answer on this:

When you move to a location with an open gate during your Movement Phase, and then get pulled through the gate during the Arkham Encounters phase, do you immediately then have an Other World Encounter during the Other World Encounters phase? Or do you skip the Other World Encounter (since you did not start your turn n the Other World) and continue on to the Mythos Phase?

We checked the FAQ, and what we read was this:

Q: Why is an investigator delayed when a gate opens up in their location, but not delayed if he enters the gate normally?
A: If the investigator was not delayed by a gate opening up in his location, he would be able to get through the Other World having only one Other World Encounter rather than two.

Some of my friends read that to say "If you are delayed, you have two Other World Encounters, and if you are not delayed, you only have one."

Others read that as "The reason you are delayed is so you cannot have less than two Other World Encounters."

Please clarify.

Yes, the investigator will have an Other World encounter. The FAQ question is implying that the gate opens up on the investigator during the Mythos phase. But if the gate opens up on an investigator during the Arkham Encounters phase, the investigator will have three Other World encounters.

In a simpler way, follow the phases: all investigators that are in an OW area at the beginning of Phase 4 - OW encounters phase must have and encounter in the OW. So, yeah, gate opening under your feet during phase 3 grants you (unless you're lucky) three encounters in the OW

I wouldn't think you'd get three encounters, though… Gates only open during the Mythos phase, right? So if a gate opens on you, then on your Movement phase you would stand up, have your encounter in the first half during the OW Encounters phase, and next turn move across and have your second encounter, then next turn move out. How would you ever have three encounters, unless something else causes a further delay?

If you get "a gate and a monster appears" Arkham Encounter (Phase 3), you're immediately sucked through to the OW and delayed, then when Phase 4 comes around, you get an OW Encounter. Next turn, you stand up, still in the first area, 2nd OW Encounter in Phase 4, third turn you move to the second area and have a 3rd OW Encounter.

Nope, wrong. Gates open primarily in the Mythos phase, but not exclusively. So yes, you can get three encounters.
