No love for the Over Lord?!?

By ilikegames, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Ok so I see the heroes gaining "levels", getting new skills, and treasure (don't know if there's copper/silver/gold level).

What does the OL get? I don't see the different levels on the monster cards (i.e. RtoL). As the hereos get more BA are they just going to destroy the vanilla baddies? Does the OL get to upgrade his deck when the heroes upgrade skills?

Yes, the previews have shown that the OL gets to upgrade his deck, there are level I and II monsters, so the monsters get an upgrade, and the OL has some choice in which monsters the heroes will face in the different quests, so he should be able to counter their strategy to some level. The OL will also gain lieutenants which we know very little about.

The OL will also gain experience with which to purchase additional cards to modify his deck (minimum size of 15 cards).

Read the previews on the website. There is one all about the OL.

I thought it was FIXED size of 15 cards. Meaning, when you buy new cards, you replace an older one? Have I gotten this wrong?

I must confess, I'm with the original poster here. Claiming the monsters get upgraded is strictly true (from the information we have so far) - they will ALWAYS be tougher in the 2nd act, just as part of the game. This is not an 'overlord upgrade' he pays for with xp as it was in first edition with the different monster classes being upgraded. I mentioned this in a previous post, but it doesn't seem like there's anywhere near the variety of advanced campaign upgrades that there were in the first edition. It's possible that these haven't been revealed yet, or the full AC hasn't actually been fleshed out yet and will come in a later expansion, but I will be *slightly* disappointed if this is it.

Don't get me wrong, I still think this looks excellent, and I'm purchasing it as soon as it's released, but I really loved the customisation of first ed. The classes seem excellent in this edition, and I hope it wil scratch my customisation itch, but I am fearful the overlord won't really have a lot to choose from (this *could* be because the campaigns are significantly shorter of course…)

The Sinister Schemes preview stated that at the start of each quest the OL has the opportunity to pair his full deck down to a minimum of 15 cards.

The OL starts with a basic deck of 15 cards, which he can add to by spending XP on additional cards as the game progresses. IIRC, the preview that dealt with the OL mentioned him having the choice , at the start of each encounter, to either use his full deck as accumulated thus far or to pull out cards he doesn't want (down to a minimum of 15 cards.) So the answer is really both. You can let your deck build up so you have all sorts of options, or you can trim it down to focus on a particular strategy, and you can make this choice before each map starts.

This is true, the monster upgrade appears to be automatic (from what we know so far), but don't forget that in 2e the OL also has more freedom in terms of what kinds of monsters he uses. Sort of like the A, B, C, D choices per dungeon level in the AC game, except that he can modify his choices each time he brings in reinforcements.

There's also the question of LTs. We know they exist in 2e (and there's even three new ones to boot), but I don't think it's been made clear exactly how they will work.

Yeah, I'm wondering this too. With (we assume) no overland map, are they just going to be 'signature' monsters in a dungeon? I hope not, because that's kinda dull…

There's a curious thing about lieutenants: in one of the earliest images released for D2E (the one showing a selection of tokens from the game) we see a round token with the image of Lord Merric Farrow on it. Then recently, in the banner advert for D2E over on BGG, we see another token that looks like it might be a LT (with a skeletal-looking guy on it) that looks more like the stand-up tokens as used in Android, Horus Heresy, Arkham Horror, etc. Why would you need two different types of tokens for the LTs?

That is, if the second type of token is a LT at all. Maybe it's something completely different.

Perhaps the LT will gain exp and skills to keep them one step ahead of the heroes?!?

from the preview "a fat goblin" it seems that the overlord has goals and objectives too. that should prove interesting, giving the OL more to do than just throw peons at the heroes.

Well, based on the more recent campaign preview, it sounds like Splig is basically a "hero monster" who appears in the second map of the Fat Goblin quest (remember FFG has previously told us that there are an average of two "encounters" [maps] per quest.) How well the heroes performed on the first map will influence how powerful Splig is on the second (he gains health based on how many bushels of crops his goblins managed to steal.) But there is no indication as yet that Splig will reappear in later quests, or that he can go off roaming the overworld map, let alone earn XP.

LTs that earn XP and run around the overworld map would be a cool idea for an expansion, but it doesn't sound like it's in the cards for 2e base. Of course, I could be wrong, there are still details to be filled in. =)
