Nightmares vs. Condemned by the council

By Unbowed, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

I also posted this in the deck construction section, but I get the feeling that not many people check that, so I am also posting it here.

I am building a Lannister deck for the regionals, and I would like your advice. I need location control, and I'm not sure what to put in. Nightmares is flexible, since dupes won't save you from it and you can use it on characters, too. However, Condemned by the Council seems like a more permanent solution. I am not sure which one to play. Can someone give me advice?

In no way should nightmares be considered location control :)

What he said. Nightmares can be all kinds of very short lived spot control, or maester control, but that's about it.

Just run Newly Made Lord out of house. It's Lanny they can afford it. Plus he can't be canceled. :)

Well, I am running a PBtT deck, so I can't have anyone to expensive since I need to lock down on my opponent with Fear of Winter right away, so I must have cheap charaters for setup. The only card with cost 4 or higher is Cersei.

Well, for PbtT I guess Condemned will be the better choice as an event (since you'll be losing the game anyway, unless you can win intrigues at least on defence)… However, I'd recommend running Fleeing to the Wall as support for that, if you can in any way make room for it in your plot deck and aren't over-heavy on locations yourself. It's tough to fit in, but Lannister really needs the added threat to locations.

HINT: One good way for working with Fleeing and Condemned in Lannister (due to the heavy intrigue defence) would be to save your Condemned's until AFTER you reveal your Fleeing to the Wall. Then hit the few locations they have left.

I heard of someone in my meta using that to a very stunning effect. And by stunning, I mean stunningly bad. :P 5 gold for location control is too much, whether it comes with a character or not.

I think Condemned is probably your best bet.

Not that it's by any means great location control, but if you wanted any additional assistance that may help for the locations that kneel to use their ability, you can always try the Vat of Wildfire attachment. It can be used to control cost reducers and influence until it gets discarded. :-P

Just throwing it out there as an option(albeit not terribly great imo).

Mathlete used it in his Fresno Targ KotHH decK(more on my involvement in that to come) that he made top 4 with. If he thinks it's worth it OOH, then that's what I'll go with. :P
