Neblewerfers

By Major Mishap, in Dust Warfare

Again, I'm reseraching ways to aid my Axis is attacking Allies in defences and thought about the Lothar, a mech I rearly use, that must do the job - nope, for some reason its artillery strikes do not ignore cover.

Any reason why these Burst Artillery weapons do not ignore cover? It looks like FFG don't want Allies from being removed from defended positions sad.gif

Morning Major.

You're right, cover is still taken into account when firing it. However it does have a high damage output to even it out.

There is some evidence to suggest that it was at some time considered that Spray Weapons would ignore cover as evidenced in the Nebelwerfer entry on Spray on p.113.

However this is contradicted by the Spray definitions on P.58. nevertheless whatever the final decision on Spray, the Neb 42 seems to be a weapon that would always allow cover save.

Historically, fellows, cover has been very effective against artillery. If it hadn't been, then WWI would have been quite short indeed. Now, forest cover and subsequent tree-burst is different, but not every battlefield can be Hurtgen. The effectiveness of cover vs. artillery is one of the big reasons for the development of fuel-air explosive bombs.

Given that the Nebelwerfer uses 2 attack dice for every target, even heavy infantry may well find iteself melting away.

I'm guessing that the no-cover effect may have been a holdover from rules relating to the effects of Flamethrowers etc.

The name 'spray' seems to be a bit of a clue to that.

However in this case I think FFG have got it right to give targets of artillery type weapons cover save.

And remember that as long as both players agree, your terrain can have whatever effects you want. So if you want woods to not give cover for artillery, you can just decide that and play that way.

Exactly …. I like that approach I hate it when rules are interpreted too literally and can spoil peoples enjoyment

This! Our group has been ruling it this way for years with games that don't consider it.

Only downside is traveling to other venues for tourneys and forgetting house rules, even those which should have been official rules, rarely travel with us.
